Managers coming to visit you when off sick

Recommended Posts

My ex-employers had a policy of doing this. They would only do it once you had so many weeks of absence in any year, regardless of how many separate periods of sickness you had. So if you've had 5 weeks off within the last 12 months, they probably have a policy of doing it after 6 weeks of absence - as you're now off for a week, that's why they're visiting now.

I don't really see the point of it though - they can keep in touch via the telephone. Even if you were pretending to be ill, they give you warning that they're coming, so they're hardly going catch you out, are they??

The simple solution is for every company to have a sickness ward in their office. Employees could go off sick, but they would still have to come into work to lie on beds provided by the employer and while they're there they could be wheeled into and out of the meetings they would normally attend.

When I worked for a former employer, I suffered with a bad chest infection causing me to cough alot, and unfortunately one time I coughed so much I was physically sick. The exertion was so great, I burst all the blood vessels in my eyeballs and those in my eye sockets.

My GP signed me off saying that I couldn't return to work until all the blood had been reabsorbed as I worked on a VDU and it would strain my eyes. Through maintaining contact with my manager by phone, I could tell she wasn't convinved I was bad as I'd said, so I took my next sick note into the office in person.

I wore sunglasses as my eyes were sensitive to light due to the damage, and when I got into the office and removed my sunglasses, no one then doubted me - I looked like Darth Maul!

I had a little 'light pressure' to return to work after cancer diagnosis and major surgery. And, as Medusa says, the employers dont give a ****. Watch your back. I had to quote the law at them, regarding cancer now being classed as a disability. I had to tell them to 'get off my case' and leave me alone to recover. Tell 'em nothing, refer them to your GP.

Like others I believe many companies can do home visits...although after a week is a litle extreme. My boss tens to ring me a couple of times if I am off sick to see how I am going, or I ring him to let him know what is happening.

I have been hauled over the coals for my sickness record in the last year or so but that's primarily because of my arthritis and the fact the medication I am on supresses my immune system so I get every bug going. I had 3 weeks off work in January with some bacterial infection that threw me for six, got dragged in for an official meeting with HR and management as well as with the occ health nurse who had to explain my disease and problems with medication side effects to everyone.

I didn't mind to be honest, it's not like I can get the sack since I'm covered by DDA and I honestly don't take the p*ss. I've had nurses and specialists tell me they are surprised I have a full time job and am not on disability. I like to work, I want to work as long as I am able, but, if I am sick, I am sick, and anyone is more than welcome to check on me during that time. I might get them doing the dishes or vaccuuming the lounge though.

It's better than them not bothering! I tore a ligament in my knee prior to Christmas and the reaction of my Manager at work was .. "well, I can't work Friday!" Not .. "Oh, don't worry about work, just get yourself well!"

I was off for 9 weeks in total and heard not a jot from them! Went back to work earlier than I should and have since injured my ankle because my knee keeps locking .. Still going to work, but have to wear a splint.

I would contact Citizens Advice. This happened to me but as far as I know they cannot force a visit on you - if they want to see you suggest you going into work.

I'd be a bit careful:suspect:

Or..simmer down a bit and don't listen to the doommongers.

You're genuinely off ill, you've been signed off by the doctor so what's the problem?...it's not like you have anything else planned

Your boss has stated he's coming to see if you're ok. Instead of being so judgemental why not just accept the reason and take comfort in the fact he or she is showing any interest in your health.

With all the evasive answers it seems there are a lot of people are swinging the lead and that there is no wonder that employers have to check up on people, the employer is just seeing if the OP is at home sick or as gone on a jolly  , simple .
