Motown Concert - City Hall Late Sixties

Recommended Posts

After watching the Motown 50 programmes on TV I was trying to recall a concert I attended at the City Hall in the late sixties . Stevie Wonder and Martha and The Vandellas were on the bill - the place was shaking with everyone up on their feet dancing and singing. But who else was on the tour

with them. Can anyone remember ?

This would be The Motown Revue, never been, but heard all the up and coming names appeared on one show including people like The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder,Temptations, Marvin Gave, Junior Walker, Edwin Starr, Tammy Terrel, Marvalettes etc.

All little unknown in the U.K. at the time, must have been a great show, imagine how much it would cost today if something like this was put on, probally half a crown in those days. If only we could turn back time.

I saw David Bowie at the town hall in the 70`s, we queued up all night for the tickets, it was in his ziggy stardust days, everyone was up and dancing it was the hightlight of my teens!

Over the years I have seen The Four Tops a few times;various incarnatians of the Temptations a few times; Junior walker a couple of times : Edwin Starr several times and the Marvelettes once.

I am guessing that the Motown Review that Escort1 refers to featured Earl van Dyke as the backing group and is not the one you are referring to in the late 60's.

I remember Stevie Wonder giving a fabulous performance and if I remember correctly Booker T and the MGs not only performed themselves but also provided the backing to the other performers.

Thanks for the replies folks - I think the original Motown Revue was a few years earlier. This concert was held when the stars were established in the UK. The City Hall was full - the review concerts were poorly attented.

Would have loved to have seen Bowie - bet that was awesome.

Saw a lot of Motown acts at the Fiesta - Four Tops , Junior Walker etc.

Booker T did a concert at the City Hall with Blue Mink on the same bill around

1970 - that was a good one.

Cheers Chris

A bunch of us went to Donny Top Rank to see Tammi Lynn - although she only had the one hit, her live repertoire was awesome - Great Night!!
