maurice1 10 #1 Posted January 30, 2009 Does anyone remember when instead of putting a price on goods (in old £'s) it would be shown as a mixture of letters ig SX/W. I remember my fathers ironmongary using the code up to the mid 1960's but cannot remember what the letters stood for?. hillsbro 28 #2 Posted January 30, 2009 I well remember this system, and I think each shop had its own coding system. The idea was not to let the customer know the price of an item until you had done your sales patter, so that you stood a better chance of a sale. Jewellers especially used the system - I remember Baines in Hillsborough had lots of rings, watches etc. in the window, all with price tags in code. cd1965 10 #4 Posted February 5, 2009 One code that was used was: S P E C I A L T Y 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and obviouly 0 There was also another letter used...can't remember what it was.....but it was for a same number: like £9.55 would be £Y.IB Think that was put in to confuse anyone trying to crack the code! lol Funny though.....its about 25 years since I used that code...but I still remember the word !
