holidayhutch   10 #4 Posted December 8, 2008 If she was straying and is in season there is always the possibility that she may now also be pregnant so there may be pups to think about too.
 Share this content via...
Lotti   10 #5 Posted December 9, 2008 No idea about the teeth, to be honest. If she is under one year, this will (or certainly should) be her first season so she may well be freaked out by it.  Take her to a vet who will scan her for a chip, they shouldn't charge and if they try to, refuse. If they offer to cut her nails or give her treatment this will cost and they may add a consultation fee on as well (this happened to someone recently). If she has a chip, the vet should contact the chip company and find out details and they will either take the dog and reunite or give the owner your details if you consent to this so that the owner can get in touch with you. They cannot give you the owners details, as far as I'm aware.  If you'd rather not go to a vet, there are some members of the forum who have completed microchipping courses and have scanners and access to details.  Not sure about spaying vouchers.  Because she is in season, try to keep her in as much as possible. When out, ensure she is on the lead and walk in quiet areas at quiet times. Try not to walk in areas where dogs may be off the lead because if an offlead entire dog catches her scent he could end up in trouble if he tries to follow it.  You can also report her details to http://www.doglost.co.uk and try the radio stations, phone the dog wardens to see if they have had a lost dog report and leave her description with them in case her owner contacts them. Strix   11 #6 Posted December 9, 2008 If you choose to keep a dog you've found, you need to allow 28 days for the owners to reclaim her (unless you are a dog pound, in which case it's only 7 days)  Registering her as 'found' with the dog wardens will give evidence that you've complied with legislation, so if somebody tries to claim her at a later date, you're legally her owner then  The other option is to take her to the pound and place a reserve on her for when her seven days are up, but that would incur an adoption fee, and I wouldn't wish the pound environment on ANY dog in good weather, let alone whilst the weather is as cold and wet as it is now
 Share this content via...
Classic Rock   10 #7 Posted December 9, 2008 Having lost my dog for two weeks I can only assure you how frantic I was. There may well be a pet owner out there who has lost their pet and is hunting high and low for it. As much as you adore this dog you really do need to let the owner have the opportunity to reclaim her. There's a lot of good advice on this thread, especially from Strix, please do try to let the owner reclaim her.  If you plan to take her to a vet, check to see if they'll charge you for scanning her so there are no unforseen costs. Strix   11 #10 Posted December 9, 2008 need to look more into informing dog wardens- does anyone know how we go about this? yep http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=124155 When she's scanned, can you insist on being informed WHEN the owners are contacted? (assuming she's chipped). Classic Rock's situation was that her dog was scanned the day after he went missing, but neither the vet who scanned nor the chip company themselves actually got in touch with her!  The systems sucks, and I'm doing as much as I can to ensure dogs and owners don't fall victim to the disorganisation, but it feels like I'm fighting a losing battle  Unless somebody actually loses their dog, they just don't care that the system is a flaming mess! Strix   11 #11 Posted December 9, 2008 She isn't chipped.Make sure you get the found dog information registered with the pound then, and start counting your 28 days - until this passes she's not really yours WRT 'adopting' her as your own, phone the RSPCA. They are sometimes able to help out with such things as Vaccs and speying if you're prepared to take a dog in without putting it through the whole rescue process which would cost rescue money, and effort, and would traumatise the dog
 Share this content via...
