Since the ppz scheme will eventually encircle the city centre, I'm looking forward to the day when it's implemented in places like Arbourthorn, Manor, Burngreave and Pitsmoor which are no further away from the centre than well-heeled areas like Broomhill, Crookesmoor and Ecclesall Road.

"Well heeled" has nothing to do with it. They've initially addressed the areas which were having the most problems and are working outwards from there, all of which is very logical.

I don't believe most of the areas you mention currently have commuter parking issues.

They're not saying they can't - just making it more difficult and hopefully more inconvenient, so they are persuaded to other forms of transport.

Negative encouragement will never work as well as positive encouragement, making buss fares a lot cheaper than their current rip-off prices would probably work better to tempt people to use them, but the council have no control over that anymore.

If it's cheaper to run a car than catch a bus/train people will continue to use a car no matter how much you try to inconvenience them.

The stated aim of the somewhat car-unfriendly city of Sheffield is to encourage motorists to use alternative means of transport... Well, in my case at least, it hasn't made me reconsider my choice of transport but it's certainly made me reconsider my choice of destinations!

I pay dearly to run a car, it means that I can travel to any destination of my choosing, A, B, or C. If, when I arrive at 'C', I find that I have problems finding somewhere to stop for an unlimited period, without being penalised, then I strike 'C' from my list of possible destinations. Ecclesall Road is just one of the many 'C' locations that come under this classification.

I've not used Sheffield's infrequent, expensive, slow and often scruffy public transport for many years... and nor do I intend to, despite the valiant attempts of the council to persuade me! ;)

As discussed before on here, I won't venture anywhere near Ecclesall Road now that the council's rip-off parking scheme has come into force. Strangely, your site makes no mention of that scheme.

Are the businesses along Ecclesall Road starting to struggle, I wonder? So much so that they've resorted to posting adverts thinly disguised as threads?

The minister of parking has appeared I see. :hihi: Folk who actually use Ecclesall Road to shop and socialise find it far easier to park now that the scheme is in force, I wasn't in favour of it at first but having experienced it I think that its a good thing.

What beats me is what can you actually buy on Ecclesall Road?

A Rambo knife, crossbow or replica submachine gun perhaps. Maybe some very expensive kitchen utensils from the shop down the road to go in the very expensive kitchen from the shop up the road.

I don't mean to offend anyone who sells normal things such as clothes, jewellery, TV/Audio etc, but Ecclesall Road is not what it was in the 70's, 80's & 90's.

A tailored suit, a car, a house, a coffee, a meal, a camera, a television, toys, gifts, games, fresh meat, furniture, cards, fine jewellery, dress jewellery, watches, food, flowers, shoes, bags, curtains, musical instruments, beer, underwear, clothes ....

What are you after?

Because people are reluctant to leave their cars unattended in these areas thanks to the negative perceptions of these areas?

Not for the time being. I do remember something in the press recently about councils being given more powers relating to regulating bus companies. Certainly more people would use buses if they were cheaper.

I would not use a bus in sheffield even if it was free and if council keep forcing people to pay for parking in these areas i just wouldnt visit them!!

The council are greedy and charging just the small 20p is them still being in control of you so that is why i wont pay and park there not the fact it is 20p

This is just a normal road and i find it disgusting after paying road tax as it is that i have to pay to park on a normal road that is why they are greedy it seems like a oh i know lots of people use the area so why not make money out of this and charge them for parking!!! They prob dont charge more because there would be uproar and noone would shop there that often!!

But back to original post i think if they made it more accessable to drive/park on the road then more people would shop there and help local business,s

So to summarise the first three pages so far:

approximately 2 people have shopped on Ecclesall Road

another couple have shopped in Broomhill

approximately 4 people won't go there because of the parking scheme

and at least 6 people have done all their Christmas shopping online.

From that it appears that the main competition is the web, but either way it doesn't look very encouraging reading if you own a shop on Ecclesall Road.

All of the above (apart from probably the car and house) you can buy from Meadowhall, and park safely and free for as long as you want.

I didn't say you couldn't; I was answering the question "what can you buy" - but the camera shop on Ecclesall Road has more choice and better informed staff than Dixons, the suit you get 'tailored' at Burtons won't be as good as the one from the tailors, and the gifts you get from Parchement will either be more expensive or not as interesting as the ones you'll get from the gift shops. The coffee won't be served in as nice an environment, the jewellery won't be as interesting and the flowers won't be as well arranged. You won't have the choice of musical instruments or the expertise of the staff, and your underwear won't be as exciting. The curtains won't be made to measure and fitted by a local company, and your ball gown won't be unique. and your fresh meat will no longer be from a specialist butcher.

On the other hand you'll have saved 20p in parking, so you can drive an extra two miles on your car, which might get you somewhere near Meadowhall if you live on the M1.
