Zimbabwe and its people

Recommended Posts

Ah, leading the witness, eh? :hihi:

And, top post boyfriday, that's what I was trying clumsily to say...

Apart from all the historic inaccuracies, it was lovely. Well done that man.

I was speaking today with a White South African who has a succesfull buisness in Inverness who was forced out of Zimbabwe as a succsfull farmer 6 years ago and he and his familly had to leave with nothing.

Which is why the idiots who drove them out are starving to death now. They haven't the brains to be able to grow anything themselves.

Anyway, in answer to the OP, the main reason is that there is a high level of antipathy towards the idea of Western or any other intervention from neighbouring African states. So in order to stay friends, we have to pretend not to notice what's going on.

South Africa could sort out Mugabe in a weekend but it isn't happening.

Frankly that's a red herring, the indigenous population just endured a different kind of suffering under Ian Smith's regime.

Being kept barefoot and ignorant was a social engineering tactic that 'justified' a retention of power by white immigrants, who were wealthier and better educated.

Thanks splodgey, but I believe your original contribution to this thread was both succinct and accurate.

Mugabe is a black monster created by a white one, there was a lot to learn from the experiences of Dr Frankenstein.

Ian Smith's inability to share power created resistance leaders and the Civil war that brought Mugabe to power. If the transition had been dealt with properly, responsibly and earlier power could have been shared with people like Abel Muzorewa, Ndabaningi Sithole or Joshua Nkomo and the violence in particular against the Ndebele in the the 1980s would never have happened and Zimbabwe would be somewhere different today.

The Tories should bear some of the responsibility as well. They never spoke out against Gukurahundi even selling Mugabe arms and a couple of years later the Hawk fighters, which he used in the illegal war in the Congo. In 1994 the Tories even gave Mugabe a Knighthood.

These are good points Tricky.

Blaming whitey (whether in the form of Smith or Thatcher) for Mugabe's vile tyranny, as some posters on this thread have endeavoured to do, is a classic example of misdirected post-colonial blame. The fact is that other African states (and not only South Africa) have been in a much better position to 'do' something about the situation in Zimbabwe, but have done little or nothing (indeed, most of these have buoyed Mugabe up in one way or another). Moreover, Mugabe has been in power for over a quarter of a century and the blame for the dire situation Zimbabwe find itself in lies very largely with him and with his African backers.

comparing the previous regime to this one is an utter disgrace! Oh it wan't our country tho! Sod it then, let email all die then cos they are incapable of holding it together! Re-installing all the white farmers would be their best chance. That's second or more generation whites and it was their home! Is it ok to boot all the Asians out the uk? Oh no, that's different

Is anyone supporting the idea of regime change? The US and UK obviously thought it was right for Iraq and made up spurious arguments in favour of going over there, but why the reticence to get involved in other hateful, despotic, murderous regimes?

The trouble is sandie, Rhodesia only worked under Ian Smith whilst the white population, controlled 95% of the wealth and political power and 50% of the land, but being only 5% of the population, that was inherently unfair and undemocratic.

Your friend or his family were immigrants to Southern Africa and became rich because of state imposed discrimination, you can imagine the uproar if immigrants to this country wielded financial and political power over the indigenous population...they can barely tolerate the odd mosque on a street corner!

Mugabe was a compromise for Ian Smith who only reluctantly gave up power and consented to free elections. Smith and the Tory government of the time wanted to negotiate a post independence white power 'hang over' and also impose a voting cap on blacks by bringing in education and wealth qualifications before being allowed a vote, so you can see from all this that a new government, largely black amd democratically elected would not be best disposed towards whites who had come to their country, imposed their rule and were reluctant to share power even after international pressure had compelled them to do so.

Robert Mugabe undoubtedly became an evil man and is a stark illustration of how power corrupts and will continue to do so for parties and individuals that have been unaccustomed to its intoxicating nature.

How you get a point over...Aint you the sweet talker

It is not worthwhile trying to relate to the minority on this thread who are giving

you a load of crap. The certain few will just try and pull you to pieces.
