I was going to say that it depends who you are and when , when you talk of terrorism. The irish had a bad time of it too over here when the IRA were about and yet hearing an Irish accent did not turn out to equal a terrorist then either. where have all the Irish terrorists gone that were figments of peoples imagination 20 year back ?

of course we think muslim = terrorist. Thats because they can get enough of it in the news so everyday they link muslim to that word. what else are you going to think of?

but tommows news will bring a whole new set of demons for us to hate and take our eyes off the ball on other important issues.

when the world goes **** or not as expected then we need someone to hate/blaime. The muslims are just the in thing at the min.

agreed, testpass. You can't hear the word Muslim on TV without the word "terrorist" being attached to it.

the spin just adds to the Xenophobia, and mistrust, Moseley demonised the Jew, in the fifties we had the demonisation of the black man, then in the late 60's, 70s and 80's we had the Irish, and now it's the Muslim.

The Muslims we know and whose company we enjoy are the important ones, and probably far more indicative of Muslims generally.

They are indicative of Muslims who are a minority in a non-Muslim country. They are people who have had to compromise and adjust how they would have lived in their homeland in order to fit in and avoid rejection. The question is will Muslims remain submissive as their numbers grow and the indigenous population stands still? The answer is... of course not.

There is already a sea change. Muslims are becoming increasingly vocal and demanding. Young Muslims born in this country and increasingly choosing to adopt the cultural practices of Islamic nations instead of British culture. Sausage-gate type stories might seem silly and insignificant but they are all test of how much we are willing to tolerate. If we start pandering to such nonsense then we encourage it when we should be discouraging it. A little diversity (glimpses and tastes of other cultures) is fine but the key word is "little". If we encourage too much diversity then we'll simply end up with division. It is the guest cultures that should be making the compromises not the host culture.

You don' think the same questions were asked of the Afro Caribbean community trying to assimilate in the 60's and 70's?

Although the cultural differences were less, there was still a vocal minority amongst the indigenous population that forecast all kinds of horrendous eventualities, including the eradication of the white peoples due to the aggresive breeding habits of the black male (I did try..but only managed two!).

Young blacks felt alienated during this time, culminating in the riots in Toxteth and Brixton.

When I was at school it was black males who were perceived as the problem, the Asian lads didn't register on the Trouble-o-meter and there were equal numbers of them. Others here may have shared that experience.

Nowadays there's hardly a peep, from them or towards them as the indigenous people feel far less threatened.

So what changed? That I'm not entirely sure about, but they are definitely feeling the alienation that black males did 30 years ago and youths do generally.

They are detached from their native culture, are told they're British, but then are alienated by the host culture, protracted discussions of this kind reinforce that alienation.

It's a classic example of the development of immigrants to any country, the struggle to establish an identity, especially for the 2nd & 3rd generations.

I do chuckle sometimes when I see young Muslim men, with broad Yorkshire accents, tearing around in souped up cars, smoking and drinking and basically mimicking the behaviour of young males of the host culture, but culturally they are divided by their religion, so many have slipped back into that as it is happy to embrace them and sadly in some cases use it for malicious purposes.

Young white males also felt alienation (some still do) and reached out for stable influences they believed would enhance their position.

The attractions of the skinhead movement and National Front in the 70's illustrates this point. Most grew out of it and became responsible members of society, the same will happen to the majority of young Muslim men, as it did for young Afro Carribbean men before them.

Then I guess we will be talking about the Polish or some other culture and how they are the be all and end all of all our problems.

By then Muslims will probably be more accepted and more established and wont need to stamp their feet to get things done because we as a sociaty will listen.

Dont think for one min Im all for pampering any part of our sociaty, if things change in this country it will be because we accept it and wont be dictated too. The saying live and let live should apply from all parties.

The sausage man situation I agree totaly that its nonsence but its nothing to do with all Muslims, he is A muslim but foremost an idiot, trying it on IMO.

I dont think he represents All muslims with this case, but if he won it then it could have some implications and will open the flood gates for other things, and not just from muslims.

If he wins it will just make employers determined to close all loopholes and ultimately be a disservice to all employees of whatever persuasion.

And if he loses it sets a dangerous precedent for employers to start moving goalposts around and changing rules to suit them in order to get rid of staff.

You've said it yourself... the cultural difference were a great deal less but crucially there was also a desire to fit in and integrate. There is a large and growing element within the Muslim community that do not want to integrate but to live how they would in a muslim country. This is something we need to keep in check because British culture and Islamic culture are not compatible. The only way to avoid trouble is to ensure that our culture remains completely dominant and theirs submissive.

The other key difference is that with Islam comes extremism and terrorism. It is something that follows Muslims around wherever they go. Just because they might not all have crap on their shoes doesn't mean we can't ask them all to leave their shoes outside before entering our home... we are fed up with putting up with mess brought in by visitors and our hospitality is wearing thin.

Young blacks felt alienated during this time, culminating in the riots in Toxteth and Brixton.

That is right. Black people are not regarded as a threat because they have integrated. On the other hand the number of Muslims who choose not to integrate into British culture are growing at a quicker rate than the indigenous population whose numbers have leveled out. Their way of life poses a genuine threat to our way of life, especially when you factor in extremism and terrorism - something costing us dear financially and in terms of our freedoms.

So what changed? That I'm not entirely sure about, but they are definitely feeling the alienation that black males did 30 years ago and youths do generally.

But you've said it yourself that Muslims have been here as long as the black population so why has one group integrated and the other not? In a word... Islam.

I don't share your optimism that Muslims will eventually integrate. I certainly don't think they will if we change out culture and make accommodations in order to make it easy for them to practice their religion. It is their religion that divides us so the worst thing we can do is pander to it and make it easier to follow.

it could lead to people not employing muslims to start with in case they too should finish up being took to court later down the road for whatever reason, which could lead to them being took to court for not employing muslims so it looks like employers could be put in a no win situation damned if we do damned if we dont scenario
