Bus fare for mature students

Recommended Posts

The First bus driver is wrong. At least he is if yuo try to get on the 40, 44, 52, 81, 82, 84 and 85. These are all 50p student routes with the use of your S-Uni card.

https://www.firstgroup.com/students/sheffield/

Your info is outdated!!

40, 41 were merged into 120 that's been operated by both operators since last Summer!! and First started to offer 50p to students on 120. 44 is no longer 50p as it has stopped serving the Sheffield Uni area.

so now the list of First's student 50p single available routes are 120, 52, 81, 82, 84 and 85.

http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/south_yorkshire/tickets/student_bus_travel/tickets.php

In other words, all route number along Ecclesall Rd beginning with "8" are 50p available, including Stagecoach's 83, 88/A.

50p being available on all 120 buses means that in City Road & Manor Top, the number of 50p available service increased from 14 to 17 per hour in the last summer.

In the corridor between West St and Castle Square where all 120, 123 and 52 pass through, these 3 services are combined to give up to 32 buses per hour that are 50p available. That is one 50p bus every 1 min 53 sec in average. In Ecclesall Road there're only up to 28 buses per hour.

..... The appropriate card is an NUS card, nothing else will do........

The appropriate card is a University affiliated NUS card

Possession of an NUS card does not entitle the passenger to the offer unless they are University affiliated NUS cards.

A university union card is not the same as a NUS card.

If affiliated to the NUS, University Union cards have a NUS logo which is proof of NUS membership. This entitles them to the offer.

If a Sheffield College student is entitled to NUS membership they then get a NUS card. They are still not entitled to the offer on First.

This is because First require a "university affiliated NUS card".(reply from [email protected] 29/07/2011.

It is very unfair to expect drivers to know which cards are acceptable.

e.g. Oxford Brookes University -yes, Oxford University -no, NUS card no, university affiliated NUS card -yes,therefore confusion arises and arguments start.

your bus driver was wrong as long as you have a valid NUS card age does not come into it as that would be age discrimination which ts illegal

Get your son to get a proper student 16-18 pass from the PTE and then he will qualify for the child fare ranger ticket on the TM 293/4 service. Cost = approx £4.80 per week.

TM haven't had the 293 since May 2011.......The 294 only takes you to Gunstones Bakery and there isn't one at a 'useful' time.

Get a SYPTE pass and get a '50p' fare - and YES, you CAN use it as far as the Three Tuns pub at Hallowes so long as it's bought BEFORE Bowshaw roundabout.

i dont see why you should have to pay bus fare for shildren here either as in london bus, train, tram and tube travel are free for under 16's....its very expensive to travel on a bus here with several children.

Because it is the policy of TFL to pay for it , if you can get sheffield city council to pay for free fares then ok , however , this is unlikely

No, SYPTE fares are only valid in South Yorkshire. The problem is Lots of Stagecoach Chesterfield drivers have problems in identifying the boundary. (the big sign saying Derbyshire is a clue)

Back in the real world an N.U.S. card suffices.

Back in the real world an N.U.S. card suffices.

As I have a son aged 19 who attends Sheffield College at Hillsborough, I would be very grateful if you could provide me with your source of information on the use NUS cards being valid for the offer on the 52 bus.

I could then present your source of information to First and point out to them why they should let him have the offer. This would save me and a large number of parents and students money.

He has been told that his Sheffield College NUS card is not valid for the offer as it is for University students only.

I do not want him to "try it on" with the driver by trying to use his NUS card as this might lead to confrontation which he can do without.

I know that some drivers have let him use the Sheffield College NUS card in the past but some do not. That is why I have sought clarification from First-who clearly stated that it must be a University issued card.

NUS card

You don't have to be 18 and a university student before you can get a NUS card. You can also get one if you're over 16 and go to a college or a sixth-form college with a student union that's affiliated to the National Union of Students.

So, to get the 50p fare you must have a SHU or U-card.

However, you can get a FirstWeek pass (£12) with ISIC, NUS, SHU, U-Card or a Sheffield College card.

Why only allow the 50p fare to the 2 university cards? It's ridiculous.

Its all down to the operator,if they dont want to offer student discounts they dont have to.

They can also add as many restrictions as they like as they absorb the loss of revenue for the difference between full fare and reduced student fare.
