RiffRaff   10 #13 Posted October 6, 2008 Incredibly rare in these parts and noticeably smaller than any bird in Britain. This is a fun mystery  We used to have a Firecrest visit our garden fairly regularly until they cleared the treed area next to us to build a couple of bungalows - this would be 4 years ago. Still get Goldcrests though, thankfully.....beautiful little birds. They seem to love our big old Christmas tree, which has now reached 30' or more. seriessix   10 #14 Posted October 6, 2008 Which reminds of a time when I took barge over to the Faroe islands, it took three days to cross the forbidding waters. All I had to eat was a chunk of whale blubber that was attached to the main mast with a rusty six inch nail.  I had decided to take the trip over to the Faroe’s to see the national team play Wales in the 1952 world cup qualifiers. Preparation for the trip had taken over a year as I needed to grow seven giant Jersey cabbages – I utilized the leaves to fashion some rather striking sails and used the ten foot stems as masts, harpoons and stilts.
