Sheffield's nightclubs - do you remember...?

I worked at Talk of the Town on Carver st in 1978 also at Genevieve Max used to own both clubs and if they were short staffed one of us would go to work at Genevieve. Most of my nights off would be spent at the Fiesta Live acts & chicken in a basket. Great.

 

My mate worked for Max for a short time in the Mona Lisa . He went into his office and he opened a big metal cupboard full of unopened promo records full that should have been given to the dj.s to promote. One evening he was working a private party when one of his crone's came in and asked for reggae. To which he told him it was a private party and they did not want any Reggae. Max came over and said you play what my friends ask or you are sacked. To which He packed up all his records and went home leaving in a middle of a party.

Morning to one & all from a very windy Zakynthos(Zante) in Greece.

This my first time on the site & I'm very old as I can remember the 60s.

Apologies to you Steel people 'cos I'm originally from Halifax but live in Greece.

All this talk of Tiffany's put me in mind of the Penny Farthing on the Moor.

I worked as publicity artist for the owners, Star Group of Leeds, back in the

early 70s. It was a bit of doddle as I used to do 'site visits' to the clubs in

Sheffield & Bradford to make sure everything was OK. Sheffield was my favourite

and the manager made sure I was well fed & watered(I had control of the budget for all six Penny Farthings and I decided where the money went).

I recall it being more expensive that most other discos in order to keep scuffers

like me out.One of the doormen(bouncers?) was an ex-sparring partner of Randolph Turpin(famous boxer of the 50s)....big lad! There were some gorgeous

looking girls in there at night but all were in 'daddy's' car(Jags,Mercs,etc.)parked

on waste ground opposite the club. Anyone as old as me who can remember the club?

I saw Alan Price and Georgie Fame at the Cavendish Cub in 1967. If I remember rightly, the dance floor rose and became the stage.

I saw tommy cooper and dave allen, and others. me and the wife (then girlfriend) used to have a good drink, then downstairs to the casino, if I won back upstairs to the restaurant. T.bone steak 17/6d. had some great nights there.

Lamplighter was just a fancy extension(or change of decoration) in the far end of the club(bar on your right hand side) and was supposed to be Edwardian in style. I never saw the finished product as I left Star Group just afterwards(late

1971).Still got an original menu from 1970 when all the prices were in 'old' money and decimal.....must drag it out and give you some laughs at the prices.

I also remember I Went to Tiffanys, Penny Farthing Club, Cavendish, Fiesta, Penthouse club, funny thing is I rarely drink now, never went to Mojo or .. ?? (Stringfellows clubs) Hoffbrahaus, round from Redgates, under the car park

 

Fiesta - saw Dave Allen, Marti Caine, Canon and Ball, Justin Dee, plus lots of other groups, solo singers. etc....memory fades, we had a friend who got us complimentary tickets

I think Crazy Daizy opened in 1974 and as Jimi Hendrix died in 1970 I doubt that and as a 'Daizy' regular, don't recall LZ being there.

 

It was previously Lowenbrau bier keller, this opened around 1972. The bigger Hofbrauhaus bier keller took its trade and it soon closed with Crazy Daizy taking its place though I can't remember exactly what year.

Was the Penny Farthing later shortened to Penny's? I went once or twice when I was 15 or 16. I seem to remember some of the lads from school nipping down there to spend their school dinner money on the lunch time strip show they had at Penny's.
