DameClara   12 #577 Posted June 29, 2020 Parkers the Jewellers have been there at 19 Middlewood Road as long as I remember.
 Share this content via...
hillsbro   32 #578 Posted June 29, 2020 (edited) Hi Dame Clara, Yes, Parker's jewellers shop is listed in directories at 19 Middlewood Road as early as 1930. Until the 1970s, or a little later, there was also Parkers men's outfitters next door at No 17. Originally both shops were owned by William "Billy" Parker; he died in 1935 and his sons John and Arnold then managed the businesses. The jewellers shop hasn't been in the Parker family for quite a long time but is still going strong. The Parkers were pawnbrokers and jewellers as long ago as the 1800s, and the 1891 directory has "William Parker, Pawnbroker" at No. 17. It was possibly number 15, next to the old Decor8 shop. If memory serves it had a red sign above the shop with the name in yellow. It was NOT one of the nationals that were about at the time like DER, Radio rentals etc, just a small independent. What was its name?  Any thoughts????
 Share this content via...

I've been going there on odd occasions all my life and the shop is very much a part of Hillsborough. My girlfriend (now my wife) had a charm bracelet and I remember buying a silver "21" charm there for her 21st birthday. My goodness - that was in 1968! 😯
 Share this content via...

hillsbro   32 #586 Posted July 1, 2020 Monty Thomas' shop was on the other side of Middlewood Road at Nos. 12-14, though it had a red sign and it may be what we are thinking of. It's been a long time!
 Share this content via...
