Napoleon's and Bonaparte's Casino's 1978-81

Recommended Posts

I remember Don, he was assistant manager to Stuart Furness at Naps in 1978 when I trained and worked there. I think he went up to Leeds as GM in the early 80's. I haven't worked in the UK since 83 so I've lost contact with nearly everyone I knew in and around Sheffield.

Don got sacked for stealing, he went to the tribunal and lost. Only people I keep in touch with are Martyn Lindley, Janet Liddelow and Debbie Jackson. I'm same problem, live abroad. Martyn works at the Owlerton casino.

I worked at naps at this time, I was a coffee girl/waitress Pam Wells but didn't stay Wells for long.Don Leaper is a lovely man, he was manager and Stuart. There was also a tall man called John (Hutchins or Hutchinson). other waitresses were Julie Ellery Penny Smith Diane Dibble ,Patsy, and Brenda and Pippa. The door men were Don and Dave and a bloke called George who left and opened a video rental shop in Firvale. Iffy,Nicky, Bev Pam ,Pat, Ian Gill lily Mick Graham were some of the staff and I can remember Pip his shop was more of a new age sex shop. There was also a group of regular men customers who we nicknamed the gritters. There was a little chinese punter called spike and the top snooker players came every year . 1979 when Terry Griffiths won they had the after final meal in naps retaurant .and some of the stars that appeared at the Fiesta came.Diane's mother in law worked in the cash booth Edna with another lady and Penny's mum Eunice worked in the restaurant part. They had the staff Xmas parties at Josephine's and some after time at naps and one night a week we would all go for a Chinese down ecclesall road after work .

My name is John Mills.

I worked at Bailey's Casino (Sheffield Sporting Club) on Bank St with Faye, Maxine, Peter, Bob (who trained me and Graham), Terry, Valerie, Rita and the manager: Phil and his wife Olive who was the pit boss along with Bob. The chef was Spanish John and there were two doormen: one tall, one short!

Dave Allen bought Bailey's on  18th Sept 1978 and henceforth we were known as Bonaparte's (Napoleon's in town alternative).

Brian (Moss), I think you joined us just before DA closed down the Bank St casino and opened up next to the Fiesta on Arundel Gate in 1979, I think and I was part of the team that opened it. Phil & Olive were booted and Graham Skinner made the manager. Hungarian Mick was the doorman. Brian, you were there as well if memory serves?

In 1980, I transferred to Naps and worked for Stuart, Don, Ron, John Hutchinson. Brian also moved to Naps as did Ian Dodge where he met Nicky.

I remember nearly all the names: Jill Kidman, Pat Wellwood, Helen, Steve Hawley, Iffy Khan, Jill Kingston, Mitch Pearson, Daveena, Brenda Thompson (cat woman!), Ian Sutton etc

Plus Steve (not Hawley) who was a pit boss and lived at Birley.... he was always ******... can't remember his second name but Brian would remember him? And Anne Wood (who I lived with for a short while).

Karen Naylor worked with Julie as  coffee girl. We moved in together and later got married. Sadly it didn't work out and we split after 10 years. By then we were living in Hampshire where she remained until re-marrying and moving to Wisbech, Cambs. We had a wonderful son together called Jamie who is now 34 and has given us a grandson, George who is 15 months old!

I set up the weekly 5 a side footie games at Concord Park and we at Naps (plus a few other from Sheff Poly where I was 'studying' for a Business Studies degree as well as being a full time dealer!) used to play some of the guys from The Craywood (then Tiberius) and Steve Burgin used to co-ordinate it from their end... has he died?! What happened FFS? he was a lovely guy...
