I must mention Ennio Morricone:

A fist full of dollars,

For a few dollars more,

The good, the bad and the ugly,

Once upon a time in the west and

his masterpiece Once upon a time in america.

Oh and Philip Glass and special mention for John Barry.

I have only bought 3 albums from movies and they are all from twilight! I totally love the style of music used in the films.

If we are talking movies with a soundtrack composed of mainly songs then "The Wanderers" "The Lemon Popsicle" series I used to watch on video in the 80's, "Mean Streets", "Goodfellas", "American Graffiti", "Almost Famous", "The Bodyguard" (forgive me!), and recently "Requiem For A Dream" and "Collateral"

1978 Superman The Movie.

Though to be honest Williams seems to have scored nearly every film I loved as a kid.

Someone mentioned - War of the Worlds (sorry didn't quote)

That is ace. And for those that don't know. Orson Welles broadcast War of the worlds on radio (it was not advertised as a show, and caused mass panic) :).

Also Tommy by the who is a good rock opera soundtrack.

Kinda chavvy, but Rock of Ages has a really good soft rock soundtrack with some cool mash-ups (I love rock n roll vs Juke box hero) and some others.

Footloose (the original Kenny loggins soundtrack has some good songs)

Young Guns II (Bon Jovi at the helm)

Lost Boys (very moody atmospheric soundtrack - Roger Daltrey, Echo & The Bunnymen, Jimmy Page etc)

Whilst Drity Dancing and Grease are obvious choices, they are overplayed, but that is compliment to the music director.

Last but not least - Sheff's very own Full Monty - Great soundtrack, cheeky film.

I love the American Pie soundtracks. It's all the music I grew up listening to.
