Most awe-inspiring historical site?

Recommended Posts

If I ever get to the Taj Mahal, that might take the biscuit - until then it's a toss-up between Le Mont Saint-Michel http://trickey.net/probusclub/images/Le%20Mont-Saint-Michel.jpg and the Registan in Samarkand. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/45/Registan_-_Samarkand_-_15-10-2005.jpg

The Taj Mahal is spectacular, especially when you walk through the arch opposite it and it just appears in front of you. All the photos and film of it cannot prepare you for it's scale and majesty. We went in the evening and the setting sun gave it a rosy glow.

We all see things differently.;)

Achill Island,(if that's the correct spelling) and the Atlantic drive on the West Coast of Ireland is beautiful.

Beautiful I am sure but is it a historical site?

I was blown away with Angkor Wat.

I suppose it is.

There is an abandoned village, where everyone left during the potato famine.

Which is quite eerie and sad.

Also early settlements, not sure who, or what period.

You have just reminded me of my visit to Oradour sur Glane. It was one of the most disturbing places I have ever seen. You imagine ghosts at every turn.

The Vatican and St Peters Basilica: Rome

Montemor-o-Velho Castle: Portugal

The excellent colloseium at El djem: Tunisia

Herculanium: Italy. I found it more haunting than Pompei because of the vibrant colours and the completeness of the buidings.

Valetta Port and Fort: Malta infact almost everywhere in Malta including the Buses.

lincoln cathedral ........................................

Lincoln Cathedral is quite near our home and have been lots of times.

My own personal favourite is the Ephesus in Turkey, and in Paphos Tombs of the Kings

I had the same feelings at Lidice... http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9MywP1UeBhg/SBClaQRUW8I/AAAAAAAAAi8/KE4Zel3qq1M/s400/lidice2a.jpg

Also on a WW2 theme, to look up at the motherland statue at Volgograd (Stalingrad) was also awe-inspiring: https://www.locr.com/photos/000/17/81/178171bcedc40a4bf8bad9dc4fcf6dea_M.jpg
