redFaced   10 #13 Posted July 25, 2008 Out of interest, are there streets named after the other two? I knew we were twinned with something in China but didn't know what... first I've heard of the other one. And what happened to Darmstadt? Or were we never actually twinned with them? I got the impression that we were way back in schooltime, partly because our school had an exchange/holiday scheme with one of theirs...  darmstadt is twinned with chesterfield
 Share this content via...
puddinburner   10 #14 Posted July 25, 2008 they even named a road after Bochum - whoever he was?  Bochum is Sheffields twin city, as well as Dontesk I think, not people that's for sure.  I think our Marti should definitely have a memorial! The_Bear   10 #15 Posted July 25, 2008 Yes she does. Its on Arundle Gate at the junction with the top of Howard street.  The memorial looks like a Birds Eye Waffle and is set back from the road slightly. It used to have a plaque with ther name on, but this has probably been stolen by now.
 Share this content via...
BasilRathbon   10 #16 Posted July 25, 2008 Sheffield's twin city...... lol  btw  Marti Caine - chose her name from a gardening book, picked out Tomato Cane at random and shortened it....  Not a lot of people know that, as her brother Michael famously said..... Heyesey   11 #21 Posted July 25, 2008 They are quin cities if there's five of them.  Only if they're all twinned with each other, surely?   You want to be careful. You'll end up as big a pedant as I am.
 Share this content via...
gymjudi   10 #22 Posted March 1, 2011 My mother was her cleaner, friend and confidente for a number of years. She was a wonderful lady and very huble. we met her on may occasions and she was so lovely. She moved south when my mother retired as she said no one could clean and iron like Mum. What a lovely tribute. I still have the letter she wrote when Mum retired.
 Share this content via...
lazarus   68 #23 Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) Does Marti Caine have a memorial stone in front of the town hall, like Joe Scarborough etc. I have not heard anything that she has been nominated for the sheffield-born comediene and charity fundraiser. having met Marti several times either in Scarborough in summer season, in Sheffield out shopping or at a book launch. I went to her funeral at the Cathedral and to the unveiling of the commeration to her and her work. After all we have the Derek Dooley Way (road) in Sheffield, Marti needs to be remembered by Sheffield by naming a building, re-naming a road or a tram. What do you think??????????????  There is or was a Memorial to her at the top of Howard St, the last time I saw it it was in a sorry state and It looked like just a bit of concrete wall left over from a demolition.
