Dogsbody - so you're an "ex-pat" in Parson Cross - I like it; you haven't moved far from Wadsley! Mrs hillsbro and I are just about to move back to Wadsley for a while, having sold our house in Lincolnshire (it's a long story). I think it was Plain Talker's photo you were referring to, but I have a few more in my "archives" which I'll look out. In the meantime here's a postcard that will bring back memories for Hillsborough folk "of a certain age": http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/222.jpg The view is based on a painting, and as far as I can tell is accurate in all its detail. With Burgins leather goods shop in the background and a Morris Minor going past, I think this view must date from about 1960. They always used single-deckers on the hilly route (this continues today) and in the 1950s the Leyland buses Nos. 222 and 223 were regulars. These back-loaders had a long seat at the front, next to the driver.

Here's another photo of Sheffield bus No 874 looking resplendent at the Hope Valley show in 2005 - she was there again at this year's event last month. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/874.jpg. For the technically-minded, the chassis is an AEC Regent V with a Roe 60-seat body. The bus will be 50 years old next year.

Here is an items from the dim and distant past:

 

During the blitz, the Corporation lost quite a few buses and trams and were desperate to find temp. replacements. These came from all over the country including some golden oldies from London Transport.

 

I don't know how many were loaned but the one I rode (98 Southey Green out of Castle Gate) was a red double decker and had the stairs open at the back.

 

These particular buses didn't seem to be around too long. Even that far back, open stairs were considered to be quite dangerous.

Reply to Hillsboro about the old 61 route to Bradfield I was at Herries Road Garage from 1974 to when it shut down in 1994 and remember the trouble we had at the terminus at Bradfield especially when there was a cricket match. The incident I remember was when a car had parked just before the turn round and nothing at all could get through, as it happened the was an inspector up there and in his wisdom he decided that we should bump the front end of the car out of the way, we all got hold of the bumper and started to lift it there was a loud crack and the bumper came off in our hands sending us crashing to the deck leaving us with sore backsides and a rather embarassed bus inspector. Happy days.

....the book is definately wrong!!- it is also 69 seater and wont be 50 till April 2010 ,(new in 1960). Try this- http://www./members.aol.com/AEC7874WJ/7874. Here's a photo of a No 14 Wisewood via Malin Bridge bus in maybe the late 1950s. The terminus was at the end of Campo Lane, and it was my regular bus home from school. The 13 and 14 took the same route, but the 13 went out via Dykes Hall Road and back via Malin Bridge, and the 14 vice-versa. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/14bus.jpg The poster at the far left advertises the current show at the Playhouse in Townhead Street.

Does anybody remember the double decker buses that were on loan from Blackpool Transportation, not because Sheffield was short of buses at that time, they were introducing them to the public to see if they were acceptable, as the corporation was going to buy some the same style. (This is the way I heard it, could be totally wrong.) Anyway, I recall seeing them on the Petre St route, they had the double stairway and access in the middle of the bus, as opposed to the back. It was neat seeing them run around because they had a different colour scheme. Obviously, this was many many years ago.
