Rupert_Baehr   10 #181 Posted February 10, 2010 Most people will see the logic there, but our politicians seem unable to grasp it  I suspect that they're aware of the problem, but because they don't have a solution they're hoping it will either go away - or occur on somebody else's watch.  It's not a new problem. - I seem to remember hearing people say (about 10 years ago) "The UK must increase its generating capacity by about 20% by the year 2020 to cope with predicted increases in demand." That hasn't happened.  It appears that there is no single answer to the power generation problem. Wind power can help (as, perhaps could tidal power generation.) New nuclear-powered generating stations are needed and the country may need new coal-fired (or preferably gasified coal fired) power stations. - The latter would have the 'ban CO2 now' brigade up in arms because it would add to annual CO2 emissions. Gordon Brown promised (at the Copenhagen summit) to cut the UK's CO2 emissions by 42% - notwithstanding that his own advisors had warned him that such a measure would introduce significant household fuel cost rises for a country which is already struggling to get back on its feet.
