sufc_tom   10 #18 Posted June 19, 2008 **POSSIBLE SPOILERS**   The premise of the story is good and lays a solid foundation for a half-decent film. Unfortunately, a multitude of sins prevent it from doing so.  For 2/3's of the movie you have no solid idea of where the threat is coming from or how it works except for a hypothesis by Elliott. In its defence, this emphasises the tension and confusion for the audience and by doing this Shymalan does what he does best effectively, draws the viewer into the atmosphere. Unfortunately for me, this was broken by lack of character development and flat performances. Elliotts girlfriend was detached from reality, and you really do not understand why Julian and her do not get on nor the suggestion of a turbulent marriage. The only performance I did find convincing was John Leguizamos character Julian and he didn't last the stretch of the movie. Brushing over the cracks at unfunny tension-breaking humour and the fact that the child who had lost her parents, was slowly made peripheral to the storyline from that point, we then get to the end where you do experience brief moments of what the film could have been like.  Overall = 4/10 and I am being generous. Beakerzoid   10 #19 Posted June 19, 2008 ^^^What he said^^^^  Saw it today and was not the total car-crash that some people would have you believe. Wahlberg is a tad wooden (perhaps he was empathising with the trees), but I did like Zooey Deschanel's 'not quite all there' performance as it made sense for her (someone who feels really guilty about almost having an affair trying to hide it all when everything starts to happen). She convinced me that her mind was not quite all focussed (and anyway, she could just stand still for an entire movie and I'd be happy )  Some nice touches of direction - such as us not actually seeing any of the deaths (particularly loved the scene when all the cars have stopped and we get a ground level view of the legs of people as they kill themselves one by one), but something was just lacking overall. It didn't really build to anything (which is not necessessarily a bad thing film wise, but for a blockbuster is a bit of a bad move), and didn't really resolve anything.  I'd give this a flat 5/10, but am not overly fussed about watching it again. Like I said, not as bad as some people and critics would try to have you believe, just not a good film either. Somewhere in the "Could have and should have been so much more than it is" category. lyndix   10 #22 Posted June 21, 2008 I want to see wanted, ironman ,adulthood and hancock All look good  Hancock looks brilliant!  Ironman was good but a little slow in places, we took the kids and they got a bit bored in the first half. Me and hubby enjoyed it though.
 Share this content via...
