nomme   10 #1 Posted February 9, 2005 Who are Sheffield's largest employers and can you provide links/evidence/numbers to back up your claims?  I think the council is probably number 1 followed by (i'm guessing) the NHS and then the 2 Univeristies.  Any one know the top 10? Top 5?  Nomme
 Share this content via...

bigpockets   10 #3 Posted February 9, 2005 Sheffield is the base of HSBC's IT community + a number of back office functions. All in all they employ well over 6000 in the Sheffield area.
 Share this content via...
Elphi 24 Â Â 10 #4 Posted February 9, 2005 Sheffield University employs around 5500 staff across a wide range of disciplines - not sure how many Hallam Uni employ
 Share this content via...
MrH Â Â 11 #5 Posted February 9, 2005 Norwich Union? Outokumpu aka Avesta Sheffield?
 Share this content via...
LoopyLou   10 #6 Posted February 10, 2005 Not Norwich Union, they have about 1600 people in sheffield at any one time....  They have quite high turn over though, if you count people in sheffield who have EVER worked at Norwich Union in the past, then it would be more like 50,000............. STHT Â Â 10 #10 Posted February 10, 2005 It's the council (about 14-15,000 staff I think) followed by us at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (12,500). They're the two biggest employers in South Yorks as well now following the downsizing of the major industries.
 Share this content via...

Yorkshire' largest employer.  If we take STH as number 2 then this page claims that Sheffield University is the 3 largest employer in the city.  If that is so I guess we can assume that Hallam Univeristy is fourth.  Hmm. Not sure how the civil service/ NHS fits in to all this.  Anyway that gives us a top 4 of :  1) The Council 2) STH 3) Sheffield Uni 4) Hallam Uni  .... or do you know better?  Nomme
 Share this content via...
