Vulcan B2   10 #3 Posted April 24, 2008 Hello. I have been looking on the citizens advice website and it is all confusing and I cant find a number. I need to take all my debt paperwork to someone and let them tell me what to do.  Find out where your local advice centre is - there's one at Woodseats, one at Heeley, (Don't know where you are). Your local advice centre will have a Debt Counsellor who sill be able to help you. Good Luck - it's a tough time, but there will be better days ahead:)
 Share this content via...
Squiggs   11 #4 Posted April 24, 2008 Contact the CCCS and also take a look on the site and forums of http://www.moneysavingexpert.com  DO NOT even consider these debt management companies - all they do is work out a debt management plan which the CCCS could do with you, except the debt management companies like to keep "in" with the banks so may not be 100% focussed on what is best for YOU.  Plus the CCCS is free, and doesn't take a chunk out of your repayments as a "management fee" - something that anyone needing debt management can ill-afford! Dozy   11 #5 Posted April 24, 2008 If you go to the Help Yourself Database, , and search the second box "I want to find groups or services whose description includes the word" for "advice centre", you will get a list of all of them in Sheffield.  Some, of course, are specific for students, etc, but you should be able to find an advice centre near to you to help. You may find that you have to leave a message on an answering machine, and they'll get back to you, because I think a lot of the local centres aren't open all the time.  Good look. moneyworries   10 #8 Posted April 24, 2008 Hello. I have been looking on the citizens advice website and it is all confusing and I cant find a number. I need to take all my debt paperwork to someone and let them tell me what to do.  Hi DiamondGirl  firstly it may be that bankruptcy is not for you, so be careful. I agree with previous posts, that you should be careful of who you take debt advice from as there are lots of organizations that will suggest they are independent but are not.  Your best bet is to make apt with a CAB or a local independent advice provider such as Woodseats Advice or Heeley.  It depends on where you live as some advice centres and CABs; will only see people that live in the area.  You may find it a long wait for an appointment as there are many thousands of people seeking debt advice at the moment.  When you try to get an appointment make sure you say you need to see a SPECIALIST DEBT ADVISER. some advisers are funded by The Legal Services Commission and can only see people on a low income or welfare benefits. Get things clear before your apt as you may need to provide proof of your income before the adviser can help you.  If you have to wait for apt and you want more info to help yourself you can look at the NationalDebtline website which is free and provides template letters to send to your creditors. NationalDebtline also has a telephone helpline. (open in the evenings)  If you are really struggling with things and you can't manage any of the above you can come back on here where myself and other can help you.  Remember being in debt can make people feel low but thousands of people get through it and there is loads and loads of good free help around.  Good Luck:)
 Share this content via...
Squiggs   11 #9 Posted April 24, 2008 Oh and if you are having to wait to see an advisor, use the templates of the national debtline and try to make a payment to all your creditors, even if it's only a few quid. Even if it's only one quid if you REALLY can't (be honest with yourself) manage anything more.  Basically this is a token payment to say "I know I owe you money, I want to sort this out, I'm not running away from it.  It will help when you (or the CCCS) begin negotiation with creditors.  It may be you don't NEED to go bankrupt - people think bankruptcy is the only option when debts are too much to pay, but there are other things such as an IVA which can help avoid bankruptcy
 Share this content via...
medusa   16 #10 Posted April 24, 2008 I can second (or third, or fourth) the endorsement for the CCCS. They're fab people and they're a charity which will give you free, honest advice about your options and won't ever advise you getting into more debt to make your creditors happier (which is what a lot of the companies which advertise on TV expect you to do). medusa   16 #12 Posted April 24, 2008 The CCCS is a national charity with Sheffield being covered by the Leeds office. The number for first contact is 0800 0381111. All contact with them is either free, at 0845 rates or they call you at an appointed time. You may wait 10 minutes for your call to reach the front of the queue, but they are around until 6.00 on weekdays.
 Share this content via...
