It reminds me of the story of a side that got a game abandoned after having 3 players sent off by getting another to feign injury.

Just for the record Beattie's 3 goals in 8 minutes equaled Sharps total for the season.Quite an achievement when you consider Sharp cost £2m

yep also reminds me of a story my dad told me about players betting on the outcome of a match at ipswich. apparently some players did time for it.

Since no such event has ever occurred, it's hard to see how you possibly could remember which team did it.

It has occured sheffield utd vs west brom, united had three players sent off(tracey, santos and one other who i cant remember?) then had two players taken off injured so game got called off. West brom brom were 3-0 up, in the end the result stood

The game that you describe is not the game that howeyz refers to. He specifically mentioned a team getting it abandoned deliberately.

We will probably never find out for sure its a sad state of affairs when highly paid footballers **** it up the wall on gambling.

That's one of the things that makes me highly doubt it was a Premiership - or even Championship - player, though. At that level, a £50,000 debt is not a major problem - considerably less than one year's earnings. Most players in the Premiership could clear it in a month.
