Community Toilet Scheme

Through partnership we aim to:

Increase the number of toilets accessible to people visiting, shopping and investing in Sheffield.

Encourage increased trade for members of the scheme.

Provide clean, safe and accessible toilets.

Address the problem of the reduction in numbers of public toilets in towns and cities throughout the UK.

Increase the number of toilets available for specialist user groups e.g wheelchair users, the elderly, babies and young children.

Reduce crime and particularly public order offences.

Provide better information to users of toilet facilities throughout the City of Sheffield.

Benefits to businesses

Patron Membership of the Sheffield Graffiti Charter. This entitles you to one complete free graffiti removal from your premises followed by a further 3 graffiti cleaning visits per year free of charge.

A cigarette bin fixed to your premises free of charge or chewing gum removal carried out outside your premises free of charge, up to 50 sq/m.

A floral hanging basket fitted and maintained each year of scheme membership or your business name on a nearby planter or litter bin crediting your organisation for being a partner in the scheme.

Publicity on leaflets advertising the Community Toilet Scheme.

A listing and link on the Council's web site Community Toilet Scheme page.

Publicity on a list of members of the Community Toilet Scheme.

Your premises will be included on a Community Toilet Scheme map of the city giving details of where toilets can be found and details of your opening hours, contact details, etc.

What do SF members think of this idea

Is this the scheme to encourage shops, restaurants etc. to allow use of their toilet facilities to non-customers?

If so, then yes, I think it's a great idea. More public toilets can only be a good thing.

I'm all for public toilets but the reason for their demise was that they were taken over by perverts and junkies, making them unsafe for the general public.

Will they be properly policed this time around?

As has already been mentioned in other threads, the fact that Hillsborough (Sheffield's second largest shopping area) doesn't have a public loo is rediculous. I have 2 small children, one of who'm is only just toilet trained, and there is nowhere foir them to go in HIllsborough if they get caught short. The Co-Op cafe has a loo, but you have to buy something first and they keep it locked otherwise. If SCC is serious about more public toilets, Hillsborough should be top of the list.

When we are on holiday anyone can use the facilities in any bar or hotel.

This should apply everywhere.

I agree - although I just use them anyway - my self-justification being that I've been a customer of every cafe and pub in the city centre at some point!

Would it make sense to offer a tax break for establishments who let their facilities be used in this way - a discount on business rates for example? It'd be cheaper for the council, and I suspect the toilets would be better too. Say what you like about McDonalds, but you can't deny they keep a bog clean!

Ditto Hillsborough - my 3 year old can only wander so far before needing a wee - and there is no-where (except SubWay and the Co-op) which has loos.... Co-Op is not easy reach for a desparate 3 year old in the precinct and the staff in SubWay hate us using it, but we have no other option... why is there no loo in the precinct??

I can think of two other options without even drawing a breath. Maybe you should try thinking?

Perhaps you could try posting something vaguely helpful.

funfamily, there is a large toilet in the new Bus station bit but it's a bit further up the road near the Barracks, but it's free and usually quite clean with changing facilities.

There is also the murky awful one on Holme Lane you have to pay for, that some clever soul decided to put right next to the bus stop, so the queue can all hear your goings on.

If they're actually capable of thought, then suggesting that they think is being helpful. If, on the other hand, you believe that they're so utterly stupid that the suggestion is useless, then I apologise.
