Are they saying everyone with think you have a high quality german can when really its just a french citreon?

Or am I missing something?

For me the subtext is:

 

we used to make quirky, interesting and technologically advanced cars, like the DS and even the BX - but you didn't like that

 

then we made hideously ugly, boring cars like the Xsara Picasso - you liked them so little we had to offer huge discounts to shift any of them - which wasn't great for us to be honest.

 

so now we've given up, and we're just copying Volkswagen.

I must say that particular advert has completely put me off buying a V.W.: the thought of some slobbering dog sitting with its anus in direct contact with the passenger seat squab makes me nauseous!
