mahonia Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I was wondering what the general view is of Redex / full additives? I have noticed that when I put a bottle of redex in the fuel tank it does make the car more responsive on the gas peddle:D
Guest Mod_Man Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I purchased an old Fiesta and regularly used engine cleaners and fuel additives. I can't remember which I used, I'm going to assume Redex is a popular brand and I used that. I did notice a small increase in performance but that could have just been me. I do know that the car was a 95 plate and when it went for service and MOT in 2004 the mechanic said it was the cleanest engine he had seen for a log time, maybe the cleaner was doing some good then.
*Wallace* Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I got quite a few bottles of STP fuel additive last year from poundland and have been putting it in every third fill up car seems to run sweet as a nut.
Little Buzz Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I read a test in AutoExpress once that showed none of the fuel additives they tested increased power, and some decreased it. A mate of mine used to use an octane booster in his TVR when he couldn't get super unleaded - but up in the wild north of Scotland he ran out, so he just used unleaded. He said it made no noticeable difference, and although he used super when he could get it, he never used the additives again. I guess it might depend on the engine to some extent though.
*Wallace* Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 The STP one doesn't say it improves performance just keeps all the fuel lines and valves etc clean.
Googleberry Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I once used Redex to de-coke my Austin Metro. They advise that you should run the engine until hot, remove the spark plugs, pour so many mls into the cylinders, put the plugs back, turn the engine a couple of time to spread it around and re-connect the spark plug leads before trying to start the engine! Easy really, and that's just what I did. There was a huge bang on starting, with a cloud of soot shooting out of the exhaust, followed by so much white smoke that the road I was on became impassible and other drivers had to stop! It seemed to run better after that, but I never noticed an improvement in economy or performance when added to the tank.
*Wallace* Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I've done that Googleberry it's like a liquid de-coke.
Mr_Squirrel Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Years ago i used to use Redex to clean the Carburettor and piston chambers out. During a service i would remove the spark plugs and drop some Redex in the chambers and spin the engine over with some old rag over the ports and the carbon that used to come out was amazing, same with the carburettor, run the engine and pour a little Redex down the barrels and the grey carbon that used to come out after just a few drops showed just how much fuel deposits were left inside the engine. The car used to run so much better afterwards too.
