Stainless Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Has anyone had any experience fitting PARKING SENSORS. The suppliers (http://www.parkingsensors.co.uk) and there are others if you search, indicate it is a relatively easy D.I.Y.job. The live connection from the sensors is connected to the to the reversing lights so that the sensor operates when the car is put in reverse gear, the earth is to any convenient part of the car. I am concerned about how to get the connection into the car it would seem to me the only way in is to drill and I don't like the idea of that, has anyone any ideas?
Jay69 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Just depends on what car you have. I fitted some to both my cars one that just bleeps and the other has got a lcd display on dash . There easy to fit and i just used the rubber gromits under the car to feed the wires to the back bumper sensers
wwp8 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 i got parking sensors in my CRV, and a camera in my saloon, the CRV is a bit of prediction cos it only beeps, and you have to guess when it beeeeeeeeepss means its probably 2 inches away

If you dislike the idea of drilling your bumper.... you could always tape the sensors to it.... have you thought that in the case you haven't got parking sensors in the first place that your indicator console cannot handle the fact that you now have them?.... you will need to place the warning system somewhere..... if you don't want to drill your dashboard..... use tape again. Any body or chassis piece on your car can act as an earth.... just make sure you rub the paint off to bare metal when you connect it and cover the join with grease or better still under body sealant. You will need to access the reversing switch on your gearbox..... don't try and drill that one.
Stainless Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 Thanks for your help Rat but perhaps I didn't explain myself correctly, I am not worried about drilling the bumper, I am concerned about drilling the underside of the car to pass the wiring through to make the live connection to the reversing light and the 'beeper' which I would assume would have to be inside the car. That's why I am wanting advice from someone who had done the job. P.S. Thanks Jay69 for your help, do you think the visual display is worth the trouble, cos I don't want wiring trailing over the dash board, or does the 'beeper' do the job on its own?

The neatest way of doing it would be directly behind the bumper and near to the light you are going to pick up the feed from. Dont worry about drilling the car, just make sure you have a suitable grommet and make the hole just big enough for the wires. if you put some tape over the spot your going to drill, the drill wont slip.make sure you push fairly positively till you get it started. if your worried about rust clean and grease the hole before putting the grommet in.
Stainless Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 Thank you all for your help. All fitted and running, even found access through a grommet and hole already made possibly in manufacture. The car is a Fiesta Mk 6 and there is plenty of room to manipulate the wiring behind the bumper without actually removing the bumper as advised by the suppliers of the kit. Hope that helps anyone else.
SHYTOT Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I have the damned things fitted as standard front and rear on a Mercedes. When I am trying to reverse down my driveway in the mornings it nearly drives me made. The sensors are flashing lights and bleaping both sides. I would rather do without.

There should be some way of turning them off, I think. Don't ask me what it is. We always had the low-tech parking sensor - when you hear the crunch, you've gone too far.
