Namklim Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Hi followed advice from this post ( http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=328205 ) and things worked ok for around 30 mins then the same thing happened again. Tried doing the same thing but no joy this time same symptoms as before no signal to monitor (and no lights on keyboard) the computer did try to start upa couple of times but froze out. Could i off fried my memory strips ??? I did not touch the brass coloured bits at all when removing them.. any ideas thanks mark
neeeeeeeeeek Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 The keyboard thing just proves that the motherboard, RAM and processor are working. Try it with just 1 stick of RAM in and then try it with just the other. Is the Processor fan spinning OK? Do the fans carry on running when it locks up? If you have proven both sticks of memory individually then it's the processor or the motherboard.
Namklim Posted April 3, 2008 Author Posted April 3, 2008 fan running ok and continues when it freezes/ Does it matter what slot i leave 1 stick of ram in ???
Ghozer Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 If you want, I can come along and take a look, I live in arbourthorne so you cant be that far away from me
neeeeeeeeeek Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Memory slot should not matter, does it beep with no RAM in? I would take Ghozers offer and post more if he cant resolve it.
user10239 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 for error testing purposes it is worth keeping one stick of ram in the SD0/DDR0 slot (it should be labelled in litle writing on the motherboard itself) Are there any beeps when the computer turns on? (Almost all motherboards use a diagnostic beep system to try and communicate what the problem is) The likelihood is that one or more of the following has happened (they are usually linked) power supply failure: if the Power Supply Unit has failed or surged, this may have damaged any of the components in your computer, and if its not supplying power properly/stably the computer won't run. This may then affect; motherboard failure: any one of the capacitors on the board may have popped due to stress, from a power failure or just from general wear and tear. dead ram: again from stress or wear and tear. Rarely do two sticks go so you can eliminate this by trying one or other. the likelihood if you're getting no beeping/no lights on the keyboard is that it's one or both of the first two possibilities. Its hard to say without seeing it.

When i totally removed the ram from the slots and put them back in again the comp booted up fine and monitor worked again ect ect but this only lasted for around 30 mins when the monitor went dead again. I tried the trick with the ram again and it tried but failed to actually get to windows then after that just freezing and no siganl to monitor again. will try the 1 stick ram thing and see if it helps now will post back on how that goes. sorry for late reply been out with the kiddies. mark
Namklim Posted April 3, 2008 Author Posted April 3, 2008 Right state of play at moment managed to get comp to boot used my 256 ram stick in ddr slot 2 I got all the way to the log in screen i attached my key board and mouse via the usb2 ports and guess what yes it froze previous to the attachment of keyboard and mouse had the flashing curser in password box. i disconnected the mouse and keyboard this still did not un freeze it i had to remove the power cable to switch it back off. i then tried to reboot the comp but this time it did not get to log in screen just the normal no signal to monitor. does this help anyone lol cos is doing my box in lol cheers mark
Namklim Posted April 3, 2008 Author Posted April 3, 2008 Right then have come to the conclusion that it is Power supply unit that is causing the problems. Fan goes slower then faster ect, wont boot with 512 ram but will 256 sometimes. disconnected d: drive dvd and floppy disc fan runs more consitantly. Now the big question the PSU in my computer which is a packard bell is FSP280-60pna- (pF) What do i get to replace this one. thanks for any advice . mark
