Does anyone remember the old Derelict factory close to Shirecliffe tip? on the flat land just beyond the tip? I remember it in the early to mid 80s. It was a big factory with a large chimney and it had been empty for some time. We used to go there when we used to wag school (Herries) we used to call it the black factory because it was so scary. My Mam would have gone mad if she knew we used to go there!

Our old cottage was on the power station land across the river Don right at the side of where the new college is standing now,on the bend at the bottom of Liversey Street!.Our old boy was foreman joiner at the power station and my mother worked in the canteen,I remember the rent for the double cottage was 15shillings a week, thats 75p in todays dosh, all we paid on top was for electric,a good deal in anybodys money!.It was built in the late 1700s for a schoolteacher in those days it was all meadowland, just below it was a tilt watermill the water feeding by a goit from the weir below the old stone bridge behind Bassets!.A millpond powered the tiltmill the water draining back into the Don by two goits near to the footbridge leading to the power station entrance, the power station was built in 1902,there is information on the net about it if anyone is interested including photos!.

My Dad worked at that Power station in the 60s and remember going to the Christmas party there every year.

We always got a present from Santa and I actually met that Santa years later by chance his name was Stan Whomersly a good magician to he was knicknamed Stan the magic man.
