Medical advice needed..

My little uns got two largish and quite firm lumps on either side of her neck.

She says her throat is sore but this has eased since we gave her some paracetamol (spelling) and ibuprofen. Does this sound like something to worry about?

Thanks

If you haven't done it yet then please do, remember that no one here is really able to give you much advice, without medical training and seeing your child.

It sounds like a normal childhood illness to me, swollen glands, mumps, a minor virus and I would say you've done the right thing, BUT I only have my first aid certificate so please phone NHS direct and get some professional advice if you are worried.

Also, Google the common variations and what danger signs to look out for, you might not need to ring them if you look it up appropriately yourself and know what to keep an eye out for.

My experience of NHS direct is that they take no risks with little ones so you end up at the hospital for hours waiting to see an out of hours doc to find out they have a cold

Unless it's an emergency, I'd always say google first, call docs after.

I wouldn't be asking a forum for advice on my children..... I would be contacting a Doctor or the NHS.

Good for you. But as the service is quite streched i didnt want to waste their time if it was something minor.

As it is, i will be greatfull taking the advice of the helpful people of this forum.

But thanks for your kind remark.

Swollen lymph nodes. It just means that she has a bug of some description (the lymph nodes are where the immune system cells do battle with the bug, so all that activity makes them swell).

The doctor might be able to tell you what bug she has, depending on what other signs and symptoms develop (a rash, for example), but s/he is likely to suggest that you continue giving her what you're giving her already, or prescribe antibiotics if it's a bacterial infection.

Get it checked out, and I hope she's better soon.
