Anyone interested in a Sheffield Earth Hour - if so read one.....

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

About Earth Hour

On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.

In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby. YOU TOO CAN JOIN IN, SEE THE WEBSITE!!!!

Threat to the planet.. Is this for real???

Do you have any idea what this planet has endured?

Whether you buy in to the climate change theory or not is irrelevant as the planet will do just fine.. until the Sun starts to die and burns at a much higher and intense rate and then it's pretty much sh*gged as we know it.

is Sheffield as a city joining in with this?

I noticed someone posted elsewhere about what Google has done

I doubt it'll make much difference in usage but it is another way to make people think

We'll probably make use of the time and sleep before the party folk come out on West Street and wake us up :-)

What else will Sheffield be known for I wonder ? We're already a nuclear-free zone [ thank God for that then ! If we get nuked some day, we can be assured they'll not bother with good old Sheffield ]. We are also a 'welcoming, inclusive ' city. Does everybody feel welcomed and included ? Good.

We were once dubbed the ' Socialist Soviet Republic of South Yorkshire ' but that seems to have died the death since old Arthur and Lord Blunkett packed their kit bags.

Now, no doubt we will be known as the ' Mother Earth Citadel ' or ' Global Cooling City '.

Perhaps in a few years time we will be known as ' The City of Ideas That Are Stark-Staring Bonkers '.

Earth Hour originated in Austrailia and it seems to be happening all across the world.

As craig1976 mentioned, While humanity might have a problem, the planet is fine.

I think it will be fun, its a great excuse to light candles and spend quality time with the kids with the t.v. off. Anyone who has a problem with the concept of earth hour could perhaps spend the time thinking about being nice or not bothering to post a reply!!

It may not have a huge impact on the earth but it cxan benefit in other ways, such as not taking our resources for granted. I bet in Basra they'd love to only have thier power off for one hour a day.

Oh I give up, lets all be really rude to one another, infact while the lights are off we could spend the time dreaming up ways to be horrible to people who have different views!:help:

its a great excuse to light candles

I wonder what the carbon footprint is of a candle and how that compares to the emissions needed to power a lightbulb ?

Just hope people dont have accidents in their dimly lit houses during the hour or cause fires when moving candles around etc :)

Best bet is to run round the house turning on all the lights, appliances, TV’s radios the lot to compensate for all the environmentalist loonies, and whilst you are at it fire up your 4x4 and go for a drive.
