Ms Macbeth Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 Stockton Borough Council take it away for FREE. They give the bags away for FREE. You get about 100 on a roll. They also take GLASS away for FREE. They also take PLASTIC away for FREE. Their rates of Council Tax are also LOWER. They still have WEEKLY bin collections. (: Should we be asking which party intends to include these sorts of free services to every part of Sheffield - won't be long til the next local elections.
algy Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 im sure they only charge 25p each at eccashall libary and this includs pick up or has it gone up in last 2 months Sorry, that's where I get (used to get) mine from. They were 25p because of the BOGOF, but they went from 25p to £1 in one go some time ago. (See above)
broudie Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I have bought some of these bags in the past, when they were bogof. However, I think it's unacceptable that some areas of the city have green wheelie bin, which is collected free, whilst others are expected to pay for the green bags. When I questioned this at Howden House, and was told the green wheelie bins were a trial, which would eventually be rolled out accross the city, but there seems to have been no change over the past 2 years. Even if it is a trial, I think it is unfair that those of us not included in the trial have to pay for a service that is provided to others in the city for free. The bags should be free, or those with green bins should pay as well.
Guest Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I'm sure you know its not just for the bags? The £1 is really for the collection service - who else will take away garden rubbish (even a small amount) for a quid? Interesting to compare and contrast the collections offered by various councils. Here in the southern bit of Leicestershire, we have fortnightly garden waste collections (large, reusable collection bags are provided). The council-run tips also provide huge vats where you can dump any excess; it's all composted and eventually resold locally. We have weekly black bag collections for general rubbish (up to three bags per week are collected), plus unlimited collections of brown bags for paper/cardboard and green bags for plastic/tins etc. We don't have glass collection, but there are bottle banks just up the road from me.
Draggletail Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 The landfill tax alone on tipping 1 ton of green waste is £28 (soon to be £32). The council has to pay that. I am a self employed waste carrier, tipping rates have gone sky high in the last ten months, from a previous post: Huge indrease in landfill fees/tax]

I keep telling my dad how lucky he is not having to store all the above stuff in his garage and then drive it to the recycling bins himself.
chickywiggle Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 that is bad. Does anyone know if all the bring out your rubbish days have stopped? I can't find them on sheffield.gov.uk webpage any more. I for one found our last one VERY helpful as we don't drive and didn't live close enough to any recycyling places to take heavy stuff there.
Don_Kiddick Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Stockton Borough Council take it away for FREE. . (: Rovvrem Council do too, they give us a green wheelie bin for all compostable garden waste (including branches) & cardboard. This is shredded & composted & used on municipal parks & recs. We have a blue box for glass, cans, clothes, shoes & foil. Just need to educate them on collecting plastic now - but just about every supermarket have plastic skips, so we take that when we shop anyway. Come on SCC - learn from us Rovvremmers
Boosmum Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Same here in Chesterfield, green wheelie bin for all garden waste and cardboard also uncooked vegetative waste Blue bag for newspaper and magazines Blue box for glass, cans, aerosols and foil.We also take all our plastic to the recycling centre every week when we go shopping.
Ms Macbeth Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Congleton borough council collections: Anything that's recyclable, includes glass, paper & cardboard, plastics, printer cartridges and mobile phones, clothes and garden waste every 2 weeks and ordinary bins weekly. They hold a monthly prize draw to encourage people to take part. The downside is - they have a black bin (non recyclable), brown bin (garden rubbish), green bag (paper), red box (plastics) and blue box (glass, aluminium and other tins).
