Sometimes, one can almost ' feel ' a country sliding downhill. In the past 7or 8 years alone, beginning with the Dome, so many things have gone wrong in the U.K. that it's difficult to remember them all. It's like a national malaise. God only knows how the Olympics will work out ! We've already had the budget for it over-running many times over and there's still 4 years to look forward to.

It seems strange that in the 'primitive' days of the late '40's and early '50's, we managed the Festival of Britain and the Coronation without any obvious hitches.

I feel sure a lot of our troubles can probably be traced to one circumstance ;- the education system in the U.K. has fallen behind the technology and the complexities of modern life. Thus, there are less excellent engineers, planners, computer experts......et al.....being produced. So, we get gigantic ****-ups on all fronts, one after the other. Furthermore we have a ' brain-drain ' too as hundreds of thousands of qualified people skip off to other countries as they are sick of the Nanny State, the crime and general social problems infesting the U.K.

Brian Rix farces had nothing on modern Britain. Wonder what the next fiasco will be to keep us all chortling ?

I feel sorry for passengers who've been delayed but I'm laughing at BAA themselves. These creeps wanted to fingerprint everyone for boarding a plane, even Brits who were taking flights entirely within their own country. Now not only have they had to suspend this but their shiny new terminal is a shambles. Serves them right!

Listening to the raido and apparently Shaghai's new terminal which is 25% bigger than Heathrow opened the day before T5. Doors opened, business as usual and no problems. That says so much about BAA and BA.

Experts say that along with the baggage issue the 2 phase check in is chaos. When denver started using this approach it was chaos for a year. In the end they ripped it all out and put it in the bin. It cost millions.

One of the big issues seems to be that no one will admit that the fault lies with them.

Sounds like a case of new tent but same old BA circus.

Why didnt they pick the weekend to do the move to T5 instead of a weekday.

Why pick the Easter holidays.

And why not just move a few flights at a time spread over a couple of weeks say start off with UK domestic flights then a day or 2 later if things are running as they should be move all european flights to T5 and finally move all long haul flights because if things did go t*ts up like it has, im sure it would have ment far less disruption for passengers.

We shouldn't take heart from other countries failure, however we should LEARN from them and not carry out the same ourselves.

The fact is, having the worlds busiest airport on tap, you would think there would be a boxload of backup plans when problems do occur.

Why is it that we can never build anything remotely large and it be a success? China and other supposedly 3rd world countries can build entire airports on schedule and on budget, there is also very few problems.

Why can England never build anything right? Its a joke!

 Sorry to disillusion you, but China is most definitely not a Third World Country!

But you're right that they can build and build quickly. Take a look at what they did in the Pudong area of Shanghai, the Three Gorges, their railways, the reconstruction of Beijing for the Olympics... Not that I can agree with what they have destroyed, necessarily...

Anyway, this T5 farce was predicted months ago, but BAA (Build More Arcades) and BA (Bloody Awful) were incapable of getting their act together. They have no excuses. Yes, other airports like HK had teething problems, but that was ages ago, and it seems we in this country are incapable of learning lessons from that. Can you imagine properly run airports like Changi and Schipol getting into this mess?!

LHR has been a place to avoid for a long time; and it's not getting any better...
