alias Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Hallam Uni's old student accommodation at Norfolk Park has been taken over and relaunched as Norfolk Park Village. The blurb on the website states it is "Located in a leafy suburb you are a just a short walk from the city yet far enough from the hustle and bustle to study." Sounds too good to be true. When it was owned by the uni, it was in poor condition and there were lots of burglaries. Does anyone know about it?
xircon Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 I lived there in 1980, rent was £9 per week and there was a laundry on site, definitely best student accommodation I lived in (it all went down hill after that!). Shame it has gone downhill, Norfolk Park was a great place to live next to, used to go jogging and play footie there every day nearly.
samani02 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I went to the showhouse last week. Refurb is pretty impressive, say they are spending £5m on it. Rent seems a bit cheap but i guess they are trying to fill space for this year
iamthemoon Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 its just a shame it shares the space with just about the worst bail hostel in sheffield. norfolk park bail hostel, you know, the one near the school, the park, the city center, a large amount of housing and an old peoples home, is where they put the really prolific and nasty b'stards straight from prison. theives, burglars, sexual predators, violent criminals are all just a stones throw away. bet thats not in the 'blurb'
anonadam Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I've lived here for about 2 months now and so far it's fine. There is the probation hostel next door but the entire complex is fenced off and you need a key fob to get in. Now I'm not saying it would be impossible for anyone to get in but if anything was stolen that hostel would be the first place the police go to so they would have to be pretty stupid to risk going straight back to prison, burglars etc tend to operate as far away from their home as possible, especially if they already have a record for it. It's the same as living anywhere, just use some common sense and don't leave doors/windows etc open when you're not around! The place itself is quite a nice place to live. I'm in a chalet so it's a bit pokey but the town houses are somewhat bigger, we would have gotten a town house but it was last minute and this is all we can get. There is a laundrette on site but you have to pay to use the washing machines, unless you get a house through Jammy Lodger rather than CRM in which case there will be a washer/dryer in your house. The village itself isn't as close as they claim, you can make it to Hallam in around 10 mins if you rush but I'd allow 20 mins in case you get held up on the way. A few other problems about renting from Jammy Lodger are that any maintenence requests can take a while to go through and we have no microwave! The other problem is that they randomly bought round a 30 inch plasma screen TV and hooked it all up for us. While this might sound like a good thing, we now have to pay a TV licence, but I think they meant well. Other than that this sure as hell beats living in halls or just renting a house from some shady landlord who will demand rent on time to live in a place that's barely standing. They are pretty flexible with late rent payments here, mainly due to the fact they know they're renting to students. One more thing is that water, and electric are free as long as you don't have a meter at your house (we don't ).
Plain Talker Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 we have no microwave! you can get one for £25-£30 brand new from ASDA, so shouldn't be a problem?
anonadam Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Why have you dug this up after 2-3 years? Didn't check the date lol just came up on Google
anonadam Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 you can get one for £25-£30 brand new from ASDA, so shouldn't be a problem? Yeah but 1) it'll be crap 2) That's £30 that could be spent on a night out (we are students) 3) I personally don't mind as I hardly ever use a microwave but I know some people live solely off microwave meals
