lubylou   10 #1 Posted March 27, 2008 Ok, i was talking to my OH last night about my cousins son, who plays for Hull kingston rovers. What i want to know, is, is he just my cousins son, or is there a name for him, like second cousin twice removed or something daft? And what would i be to him? Or is it just, his dads cousin? Thanks:)
 Share this content via...

Minimo   59 #3 Posted March 27, 2008 Your cousin`s son is your first cousin once removed. children of cousins are second cousins. The `once removed` element refers to the different generation Hope that helps
 Share this content via...

shlg   10 #6 Posted March 27, 2008 I had to read it twice - you mean that the children of a set of cousins are second cousins to each other, yes?  Nope: they'd be second-cousins-once-removed to each other.  You count the first number (2nd cousin, 3rd cousin etc) up your side of the family til you reach the ones who are just cousins (first cousins); then you count the 'removals' (generations) down their side of the family.  It makes a lot more sense in my head than in writing! Plain Talker   11 #7 Posted March 27, 2008 There are some who'd say certain relatives might be cousins, and they might be X times removed, but not removed far enough!!
 Share this content via...

Heyesey   11 #9 Posted March 27, 2008 He's your first cousin once removed; you're his second cousin.  Er, no. She's his first cousin once removed. Upwards, in her case; he is her first cousin once removed downwards.  Second cousins are the grandchildren of siblings.
 Share this content via...
happyhippy   11 #10 Posted March 27, 2008 Of course, in Alabama and the Somerset Levels, this is all neatly avoided ...... however, look at the results ......
 Share this content via...

shlg   10 #12 Posted March 28, 2008 Er, no. She's his first cousin once removed. Upwards, in her case; he is her first cousin once removed downwards. Second cousins are the grandchildren of siblings.  I stand corrected. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_cousin  And I've been spouting lies for over 20 years because I believed my mum's explanation!
