When planners go bad!

In all honesty the council have been working on a cycle path on that end of Penistone Road for a while and the proper red parts do look rather good so I'm sure what you see in the pictures are only temporary, at least i hope.

I'm looking forward to using this cycle path once it's finished, Penistone Road can be a bit hairy at times plus there are loads of dips in the part of the road where cyclists are expected to keep to.

I would like to know what will happen to the path where the bus stop is outside Evans Halshaw though, at the moment it looks like cyclists will have to go on the road again at that point then back on the path later. If anyone knows please shed some light.

They probably dont care if the paths are useable or not. Isn't it something to do with the fact that in order to quelify for certain funding, councils must provide x miles of cycle paths? Regardless of the fact that lamp-posts and other inconveniences may get in the way. This may not be true though, its just something I heard somewhere

The section between the red segregated lanes (in front of the car sales places/behind the bus stop) is shared use between cyclists and pedestrian. There are signs to indicate this, however I've been told that some cyclists are unsure on this bit hence the paintwork (they are better placed further along), they are not indicative of where to cycle, just to show that you can cycle on that stretch of path. The marking behind the post could be placed better. I don't think the planners would have instructed it to go there, lets wait and see if its moved.

Its complete from Green Lane to Livesey Street - it will be extended on past Hillsborough Leisure Centre, and at Green Lane you can pick up the quiet routes around Kelham Island and / or the cycle path on the inner relief road. It could be improved but it's far better than cycling along langsett / infirmary road and dealing with the tram tracks, vehicles cutting in too soon, hillsborough corner, pedestrians not looking etc etc

A cycle can easily go round the lampost, not like they're wide like cars is it?

Or am I missing the point?

it's the lamp post, non-dropped kerb combo that does it for me.

bump up the kerb, immediately dive round the post, all at the sort of speed you'd be doing crossing, what looks like, a pretty busy road...

genius!

see post above, its is shared use so you can cycle anywhere on the path, there are blue highway signs to indicate this - no need to bump up, no need to go round the lamppost. Its an access road so hardly busy.

I think my main concern now is, and if they intend it to be used by cyclists is that the bus stop at busy times fills the entire pavement and further down Cambridge motors seem to use the pavement as their own private pitch. That said it hasnt been bad the last couple of days, maybe someone said something to them, maybe it was the young lady i saw pushing a buggy intothe road to get past the cars because there wasnt an inch of pavement left.........who knows.

I too think somone has had a word with cambridge motors, the path has been a lot clearer this week, I believe it is public highway.

I've not had an issue yet with the bus stop, slowing down and a bell might help

It definitely was true, but I don't know if it still is. That's why many councils simply painted a white line on the side of a hellishly busy road and proclaimed that they'd built a cycle lane. :loopy:

Two peices of tarmac are having a drink in a pub. A red piece of tarmac walks in and one of the black pieces goes to talk to him. His mate says "dont talk to him, he's a psycle path....."
