Page Hall Shops - History

The beer-off shop was called Jobson's (think that's how you spell it) you could get glass bottles of cola straight out of the fridge and my mum used to send me there for little sachets of shampoo!!! Anyone know what the shop on the opposite corner was called? I think it was a driving school at one time.

Jobsons used to sell draught beer. You had to take your own bottle. Many time i had to go there with a note from my dad to say it was for him:D

Spinks was brilliant, I went to Earl Marshal School and if you didn't get there for 12:00 on the dot at dinner time the queue went up the road. The best meat pies ever. On Friday's I had to go every week for my mum to get them for tea.

Me too Brinny. I loved their pies, pork sarnies and slabs of parkin. I had free school meals but used to sell the ticket and go there instead. Mmm making my mouth water just thinking about it.

:-) ...as I remember it, in the sixties there was the chemist on the corner of Bolsover Road East ('little Bolsover'), then Jack Asher's Butchers, a ladies hairdressers, Bill Beever's Motorbike Shop (with the dirty photos and magazines in the window..), Siddall's Grocers, Jim Kennington's Butchers, a Tobacconist, Brian Barstows Newsagents, The Pork Butchers, BuyWise Supermarket then another grocers and a launderette.

Opposite, on the other side of Page Hall Road there was a big second hand place, another newsagents, a bank and over on the other side of Firth Park Road, McGreggor's which was a spooky (I thought) 'corner shop type shop' on the corner of Idsworth Rd.

Anybody remember anything else or different?

I used to work at Jim's Butchers after school and on Saturdays (that would have been about 1970/71) and before that I was a paperboy for Brian Barstow for 16 shillings per week in about 1967/68. My mom also worked at the tobacconists for awhile around 1970-ish. :-)

between barstows paper shop and buywise was a bookies and between buywise and maxteds was a wallpaper shop ... oh and the washhouse on the corner.

Yes, I well remember the chinese laundry. As a kid I was a bit fearful of it as to what went on inside!

Casino on Idsworth rd. Was that what The Roxy Cinema became ?

When I was a kid in the 1950's I remember one large shop a little way past Bill Beevers - like a department store - which had overhead wire arrangements that were used to send the money you paid to the office and any change came back the same way. Anyone remember what that shop was ?

Yes, It was Banners my memory gets worse !! I remember it as a shop that had everything . A real Aladdins cave but certainly a forerunner of todays large dept stores.

The newsagent opposite Owler Lane School and next to Spinks butchers shop, was called Gilberts in my day. He was situated there before I got to Owler Lane School and many years after I left, he also owned another similar shop on Rushby St. I delivered papers for him, it was a rotten round, it started around Bolsover Rd went up Firth Park rd, all the roads on the side including Vickers Rd, then around Stubbin lane, up to the hill next to Longley Park, no shortcuts here you had to walk down it only to walk back up it before you had finished, then I suppose I walked back to school or at the best cought a Tram. Some people thought he paid the best money around at that time, but if you were delivering mornings, evenings & sundays papers you earned every penny. It's my understanding when he finally retired he moved south to Torquay or some place.

Does anybody remember Ryders greengrocers shop next to (I think) a furniture store on the corner. If I am reading the thread postings correctly, Banners has been mentioned. That would have been the large double windowed store with the recessed entrance opposite Ryders? Then there was the Banners at Firvale also, which was a little strange for those days being so close together. I went to Owler lane School with Ron Ryder and remember when he started, his family had moved here from another part of the country, so Ron had a different accent and all the girls loved it. The shop on the corner (next to the little hill) was that a Davy's or a Chemists?
