Should developers pay for poor roads?

Never thought to ask in here before, it's only a random thought, so feel free to post an complete attack on my idea :hihi:

I drove from Nether Green to Endcliffe the other day, (along Riverdale Rd, and down Endcliffe Vale Rd to be precise), where there is quite substantial development going on... and the state of both roads is absolutely dreadful. They were fine pre-building.

Near my flat is Upper Allen Street, another example of a massive development area, and it's almost un-drivable on it!

Heavy lorries or coincidence? I'm not sure.

Any thoughts?

The council should do a highways inspection before such work is carried out (usually at the expense of the contractor / client) as this is to safeguard against any false claims of damage against the contractor / client.

I think the reviews are meant to be ongoing, that is before work starts, whilst the work is ongoing and once the work is complete.

If you can show tangible evidence that perhaps the wagons have caused damage to the road, I am sure the council would be interested to hear about it, although whether anything is done would depend greatly on the strength of the evidence provided. This is more often then not the hardest bit!

Should

Meaning they should - as in they ought to do it, in your opinion?

or they have to do it? - (they do it already?)

If they [council] do it already, then bloody shame on them :o:hihi:

I disagree. Endcliffe Vale Road has been in a state since before the developers started. I have always driven on the right hand side of that road going away from the Botty Gardens. The left side will screw your suspension

I'm with theripsaw - it's been shocking for years.

Often the council will defer repairs until after major site works have been completed, and as the Uni development has been on the cards for a few years it is reasonable to hope that they will be repairing and resurfacing the road before too long. No doubt a call to the Highways Dept will illicit a response.

The very same goes for Upper Allen Street. It has been like it for many years.

I can confirm ash that all councils surcharge developers for damage to roads, and sometimes make you pay for road improvements even before you get planning permission.

However they also often don't do the repairs and try to pocket the cash and spend it somewhere else.

I'm thinking of one particular development where the council charged for repairs on a stretch of road no less than seven times and never did a stitch of work.

Another example is when a road is dug up for services such as electricity, I'm sure you have seen it done where the hole is filled in and the water board come and dig a hole in exactly the same place, then come the gas company, and you always say to yourself why on earth are the council wasting so much money filling these holes in only to have them re dug, if only they would coordinate things so much could be saved. The truth however is that the council make each service company fill in the holes and charge them for the council to do a permanent repair, and they charge everyone so end up being paid more than once for the same work. But meanwhile you have to put up with crappy roads full of potholes.

Another example is on Worksop Road in Darnall. Since xmas there have been giagantic holes and craters appearing in the road. You really know when you hit one.

There's also the new development site accross from the fire station.
