igm1 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7298970.stm Now first of all, I am not a smoker, and this is not a debate about the smoking ban However, I personally think that some the anti-smoking groups are going over the top. Making films with smoking in them certificate 18s?!?!?! What could this possibly accomplish? There are far worse things going on in films that are certificate 12 and 15.
Salster! Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 They already edit cigarrettes out of some music videos. It's ridiculous. Watching a pixelated rock vid is just not the same. I'm a non smoker and I think that some people need to spend a little less time worrying about whether seeing someone smoke a fag in a film will ruin their lives or not.
melthebell Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 thought smoking WAS all but banned in most films, ads and videos???
JoeP Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Absolutely barking mad - I'm a non-smoker, occasional film maker and something of a fan of film noir. Just as an aside, it's interesting that Hitler's propaganda people used to airbrush the cigarette out of Stalin's fingers in photographs during the years when Adolf and Joe were best buddies. Not that I'm in any way calling these people in Liverpool a bunch of fascists, no sirree. thought smoking WAS all but banned in most films, ads and videos??? The film makers in the rest of the world are not taxed with such ludicrous rules as our creatives are.
igm1 Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 thought smoking WAS all but banned in most films, ads and videos??? Possibly ads and music videos (not sure about the music videos). But taking smoking out of films is absurd. How about films with an evil crime lord boss smoking a big cigar? Is it not kind of essential to make the character look bad! It's just another form of attempted censorship that is going too far.
poppins Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 thought smoking WAS all but banned in most films, ads and videos??? Probably more so in Rap Videos, this way they can get more swear words out without a fag getting in the way
igm1 Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 Probably more so in Rap Videos, this way they can get more swear words out without a fag getting in the way Precisely! Swearing is something that the 'easily influenced' (ha) are likely to pick from watching films and music videos. Much more likely than smoking, yet they are not looking to curb that. I have no love of smoking, but smokers and smoking are/is becomming increasingly villanised amongst some groups to the point of censorship.
HotPhil Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 As the comment on the bbc site says "I thought we elected councils to provide services not become our moral guardians?". What an earth are Liverpool council meddling in? It's as bad as that doctor who's suggested increasing tax on alcohol - it's not their place to comment on such things. Power really goes to some people's heads.
purdyamos Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 To come out with this in the year that Liverpool's trying to sell itself as International Capital of Culture just makes them look even more ludicrous.
Waltheof Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Well bang goes any showing of the old films noirs for a start!! And naything with Humphrey Bogart in it... So it's OK to have sex and gory violence, but we musn't have people actually SMOKING!!!
