TeaFan Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Between 30 and 130 people have been killed by the Chinese authorities for protesting against the occupation of Tibet. Story here http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/mar/15/tibet.china3 Buddhists are peaceful people, and there can be no justification at all for this. But the GB athletes will be trooping off to Beijing, giving the appearance that everything is ok, all perfectly normal. It makes me bloody sick. It would be a massive embarrassment to the Chinese government if countries started pulling out of the Olympics in protest - we should start.
Heyesey Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 We owe China a crapload of money, and we import vast quantities of Chinese goods. It ain't gonna happen.

Presumably you will be boycotting all Chinese goods, and throwing away any existing ones as well then?
sccsux Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 It would be a massive embarrassment to the Chinese government if countries started pulling out of the Olympics in protest - we should start. We had all that years ago. Sport should always (as much as is possible) be seperate from politics.
discodown Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 We had all that years ago. Sport should always (as much as is possible) be seperate from politics.Which is correct but since sport and the olympics are all about money then its a fairly empty gesture for a sporting body to say it remains apolitical.
TeaFan Posted March 15, 2008 Author Posted March 15, 2008 Presumably you will be boycotting all Chinese goods, and throwing away any existing ones as well then? consumer boycotts can be reasonably effective - probably the most successful was the boycott of South African goods during the Apartheid era. I could boycott all Chinese goods, but it would be as close to pishing in the wind as it's possible to get. The GB Olympic team (and those of other countries) has the opportunity to do something that will actually have an impact. Seeing as how our government and population are always at pains to point out how unacceptable it is to use violence to further one's ends, you'd think they'd be lining up to give meaningful and vocal support to Chinese and Tibetan dissidents, but it seems not. So if you use violence to make your point you get condemnation; if you use peaceful methods you get indifference.
pippadoll Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 The human rights in China are absolutey shocking. It can't be alowed to continue. Not sure what can be done though. Something might come from this.

The situation in China isn’t great, I agree with that, but it sickens me that you are demanding other people to do campaigning on your behalf. The athletes taking part in the Olympics may have been training their entire lives to take part. It isn’t their fault that the Olympics are being held where they are and they can’t do anything about it now. Look at blaming the bodies who voted China as being an acceptable place to hold the event in the first place.
Don_Kiddick Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 How about boycotting drinking tea? That would hit them harder. Start drinking beer instead.
