anna293 Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 im currently thinking of trying the Barf diet on one of my hounds, hes always been funny with complete foods, and also eats like its his last meal, we regularly get him wolfing down food, choking and sicking up his food and have been unable to change this, i assume it comes from experiences in the racing kennels with food. With bones etc he takes his time and seems to enjoy food so much more so are considering trying this for him. Does anyone have any experiences, tips of what to give etc, ive done quite a bit of research but experience is always the best. anna.x.
xxhunniixx Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 hey hun have a quick << search theres a whole thread on this
Lotti Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Have tried it in the past, wouldn't again. Takara was too picky and choosy and would only eat certain components of the diet so ended up quite malnourished. You can get bowls that have bumps in the bottom that slow them down when eating or you could try putting his meals in a Kong?

LaceyHiggs Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 ive used the barf diet before. i have a whippet x greyhound and he loved it but you will find it near impossible to feed one dog on the smell of fresh meat will haunt your others and they will prob refuse to eat their usual food. we tried just about every food and although he isnt supposed to look like a labrador he lost weight and looks undernourished! so we wend for james wellbeloved. hypo allergenic no pap in it. we also feed puppy kibble as its higher in protine so great for the finer breeds or breeding dogs. i leve food down more or less all the time the trouble i found with meal times is he would also wolf down till he was sick. if its down all the time they learn they dont have to fight for food and wont wolf it down. hope its helped a little

We cant leave food down all the time as having six who all eat at different speeds some would miss out. Arthur would just eat all the food and wed probably end up with a scrap over food which meal times avoids well, Arthurs an ex racer who we get the feeling has been starved so any food he wolfs down in seconds many of the ex racers are like this because theyve been so controlled in the past with their eating and most of them never grow out of it im afraid, and Arthur is the worst ive ever had for it, it took him 5 seconds to eat his breakfast this morning of mince and veg. anna.x.
gonzesse Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 This diet is apparently dangerous for dogs. Dr Rachel Strhmeyer has tested 21 commercial raw meat diets and found non-type-specific E coli in all the raw meat products and 10 out of 21 contained S enterica. http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/jan05/050115ww.asp I have just been on an excellent dog training course with Barbara Sykes and food is a big issue in her experience of dog training She has recommended I take my Ziggy (staff/lab cross) off James Wellbeloved and move him onto Skinners senior for a month as he is a bit highly strung and she thinks this is to do with his high protein diet. She talks about it in her website here http://www.bordercollies.co.uk/article.php
gonzesse Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Also raw mince can apparently contain Neosporosis Caninum which is a particularly nasty parasite that affects the brain and works through the spinal cord to the major organs. Dogs Trust Vet Director says "It's a pretty horrible parasite. The simple way to avois it is to cook the meat and never feed it to your animals raw. Most people don't realise it is extremely ddangerous, you must always cook the meat you or your animals eat" http://www.doglistener.co.uk/important/important.shtml
