also not that it was great but re-enacting a war time picture house night.. so those of us who wasnt around during the war years, so we could see how our grandparents/parents etc spent their ha'penny etc..

charge war time prices and provide typical 1940's food at the same price too. id love to go!!

I do like the idea of tying the mood of the interior to the feel of the film - and the unrenovated interior would be ideal for conjuring up the war spirit! Especially with the old adverts on the back wall, though they would be hidden by the screen of course. I don't think charging wartime prices would be much of a fundraiser though. :D

Some Like It Hot seems popular - it is frequently the Desert Island film at the Showroom.

And it's very entertaining.

Thanks for all wonderful suggestions, it's lovely to see how passionate people are about film and about the old picture house. You've all come up with some really great films much deserving of another airing. I'll feed back the info. As far as I know (but I'm fairly new to the group that help support the restoration) work has started on the roof, and we're hoping to get the foyer restored to its former glory next. The auditorium is still rather shabby (faded splendour!), but still wonderful. And I think when we have the film night (as with the show nights) the bar is open and you can sit there with your wine as you watch :) Don't forget you can go to their website to find out about events, the restoration and how to support it @ http://www.abbeydalepicturehouse.co.uk

"Whatever happened to baby jane"

That was on at the Showroom last week, there's a whole Bette Davies series at the moment (shame it'll be too late to tie in with this).
