New buildings in Sheffield - Do you like them?

Ironically lots of the iconic buildings and structures around the world are designed by Brits, so why are these cutting edge buildings not constructed here in the UK? My theory is that we build things by committee. This saves us from spectacular flops, but it restricts how radical our buildings and structures can go.

The cutting-edge buildings are commissioned by private enterprises. When Sheffield becomes the place where everyone who is someone has to be seen, then we may see the rich and mighty of our planet thrusting money in our direction.

Still, I have to say, the old city is starting to look something like a place where things are happening.

It's a damn sight better than some of the wretched plonk-holes elsewhere in the country.

I wasn't commenting upon Sheffield, but on the UK in general. I agree with you, I am exited how Sheffield is shaping up. I am concerned that the upcoming financial crisis might get in the way of Sheffield's redevelopment.

Architecture doesn't always please everyone, I admit the monstousity surrounding the winter gardens should be torn down, but like someone said before money speaks louder. Rumour has it that the winter gardens was partly funded by the developers of st Pauls hotel, as a way to get planning permission.

Instead of moaning on here about the state of architecture in the city. why don't you click that red cross in the top right of your screen, and do something about it? You can object to these buildings being built. You can demand for a more aestheticlly pleasing building. (Please as a personal favour, if you do this demand low energy, environmentally consious buildings)

I was always told 'don't critisize unless you can do better!'

Thats right. Play ignorance card.

Architecture is one of things which should affect your life on daily basis after all the average person spends over 60% of their time in one.

I don't condone any of the buildings rising in sheffield, maybe its time for SCC to get off their asses and start doing something to ensure Sheffield gets better buildings with Architectural merit.

Information Commons does it for me

Wards Brewery apartments - doesn't

Very tall slender glass buildings don't either

Do you think the new buildings being erected in Sheffield have,or have not, improved the look of our city?
I'm not keen on sixties architecture so the answer is: no.

i'm not too happy about the large multi brown box down at the moor below plug. I'm guessing its meant to be a car park? having said that atleast its something a bit different. Id rather have interesting than dull. Although i guess you could call it dull because its a big brown box. hmmmmm!

I do not like the new buildings, especially those near the Peace Gardens.

It all looks like they've thrown up as many office buildings as possible, without much thought, to make as much money as possible before the building bubble bursts. I wasn't aware the countrt was doing so well as to warrant so much office space.

It's not just here, there are identical rubbish city centres everywhere with the same faceless bars and boring shops.

As for all the thousands of flats, I have no doubt they will become slums over time.
