steveb2007 Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Did you prefer buses when they had the open door at the back? Buses were better in those days weren't they? Open door at the back, the driver in his little cab and the clippie on the bus, those were the days............................ http://uk.images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=leyland+titan+bus&y=Search&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-501&x=wrt
hazel Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 I'm surprised anyone but me can remember buses with open backs. I once was on an open backed bus with my child's pushchair tucked under the stairs when we flew round the corner at Midland station and my pram shot off the bus. With a new baby, a 2yr old and a 5yr old I watched it go in astonishment as the clippie rang the bell stopped the bus and ran after it. I suppose it was all in a days work for her but I was very grateful. hazel
steveb2007 Posted March 14, 2008 Author Posted March 14, 2008 Those old buses were much more exciting than the modern, comfy, boring, smooth buses of today!
Mathom Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 You mean the old Routemasters? They were fab - I've been on a few of those in London and always found meself looking for Blakey They had to get rid though because they're not wheelchair friendly. But you still get some doing tours and whatnot.

Mathom Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 I'll get you Butler, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! Heheh, and you always expect to see some 'diamond geezer' having a snog-up with his 'bird' on the top deck
shaznay Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 we used to sit on the long seats just as you got on, we always pestered the conductor to let us ring the bell
steveb2007 Posted March 14, 2008 Author Posted March 14, 2008 I used to like turning the handle at the front, upstairs, and when getting off laughing that the bus number, which was 76,was now like 85!
Greybeard Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 And the conductors were called 'clippies' because they would give misbehaving kids a clip round the ear
callippo Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 the bus I used to get on as a kid had these automatic machines (called Videmat or something) where you put your 2p in the slot and the ticket came out with this impression of the coin printed on it. if you wanted to gamble with the inspector (remember them?) not getting on to check the tickets and keep the 2p to spend on something else, you could put a small stone into the machine to get your ticket.
