Waste of money installing new bus stops?

The siting of a lot of them is bonkers too. Take the High Street outside McDonalds - by far the busiest stop in town is erected on by far the narrowest part of pavement in town. The stupidity is breathtaking.... If they only moved it a few metres down (or swapped it with the lesser-used stop next to it) then the pedestrian 'jams' there would be avoided.

Completely agree with that. Its the most ridiculous place ever to have a bus shelter.

Has anyone yet noticed the obvious drawback to using glass as a constituent component ?

The wired glass of the previous generation of shelters must have saved a fortune in brush heads and a lot of unnecessary suffering from cut paws.

No doubt some E U Legislation prevents reverting to that idea or some other ban on common sense.

I'm sick of seeing broken glass all over the floor where the repribates of society have decided it would be funny to take a brick to the shelter. They all ought to be fitted with the sort of plastic that ensures the said brick bounces back at the perpitrator and smacks them square in the face.

Total agree here... The City Council and PTE seem to be held at ransom by the operators, I've been stood at the side of the road in a meeting with operators (outside of Sheffield) and seen grown adults representing the bus firms act like spoilt kids and even walk away from the meeting when I suggested moving a stop in a similar fashion to what you suggest above !

It's all about getting their bus to the front of the line so it can park and block the ones behind - so much for fair competition

And all the stops up High Street do just that, in particularly the stop o/s McDs seems to be very carefully designed to ensure that a 52 can hold up 8-10 buses behind it (and various other vehicles illegally driving this way).

Are you really saying that Wirst and Agedcoach can dictate where the stops go? I thought that was SYPTEs job with the Council. So if SYPTE moved a stop, could Wirst just carry on stopping where it used to be?

Hi I have recently retired from the PTE who is the company that install your stops and shelters, the PTE receive funding from each of the 4 districts of South Yorkshire. Baiscally if your dont spend your money you dont get any next year, but in fairness to the PTE they do have what they call life expired shelters, which is were there are deemed no longer safe to be on street.

Shelters are requested by members of the public, bus stops are not. Hope this helps

Considering they are broken nearly as reguaruly but cost a hell of a lot more, its more to do with economics.
