HarmOKnee Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I don't know who's responsible for replacing bus stop structures, council or bus companies, but either way I think it's a waste of money. What's wrong with the structures already there? They aren't exactly old either.
WhiteHawk Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I think new shelters are needed in some places but what I don't understand is why they put them at stops that hardly get used. Eg, the stop I get on at in Deepcar to go into town is used a hell of a lot, probably the busiest stop in the valley I would say, yet theres no shelter of any sort, we just have to stand out in the open. Then you look across the road and you have a shelter for a stop that is barely used at all. Also, near my work on Queens Road, theres the stop outside D&A that has just had a new shelter, yet in the 7 years I've been working here, I have hardly ever seen that stop been used, certainly nowhere near enough to warrant a nice new shelter.
lowby Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 A friend of our works for Murphys (the green vans) and he replaces the glazing at the bus stops when they have been smashed. So i would have thought it would be murphys that has the contract for replacing the actual bus stops. I'll ask him this next time we see him.
Haydn1971 Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 As I understand it, the South Yorkshire PTE "own" them, but they are mainly paid for out of the advertising on them - every few years or so a new firm wins the contract and they change the shelters. You need to also consider the total cost of ownership - a bus shelter costs money to have sat on the street - be it cost of maintenance, replacement glass or swapping timetables - also some are illuminated, so that needs to be factored into the total cost - so replacing a shelter might actually work out cheaper than leaving an old one in place given certain factors Also, if a new firm comes along with a different shelter design, it might be cheap for them to replace the old shelters with their own design, rather than pay the previous firm money for parts Perhaps Planner1 would be able to confirm the breakdown of public money vs advertising money that goes into Bus Shelters.
haddockman Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I don't see the point in replacing bus shelters when they're in reasonable condition and can just be repainted and made to look better. I'm glad of the bus shelter near D&A on Queen's Road though, used to be horrible waiting there before it was built!!!

HotPhil Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 The siting of a lot of them is bonkers too. Take the High Street outside McDonalds - by far the busiest stop in town is erected on by far the narrowest part of pavement in town. The stupidity is breathtaking.... If they only moved it a few metres down (or swapped it with the lesser-used stop next to it) then the pedestrian 'jams' there would be avoided.
DON. Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 wouldnt know got a car but as for anything the council install won't last Give it a few weeks and they wil dig up a perfectly gud road up just for the sake of it.
logiebaird Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Has anyone yet noticed the obvious drawback to using glass as a constituent component ? The wired glass of the previous generation of shelters must have saved a fortune in brush heads and a lot of unnecessary suffering from cut paws. No doubt some E U Legislation prevents reverting to that idea or some other ban on common sense.
Ally_Fraser Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 They've replaced the old stone shelters at Bamford train station this week - there was absolutely nothing wrong with the old ones, but now we've got some poxy blue plastic "greenhouses" adorning both platforms.
