*Wallace* Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 The BBC have paid £500,000 yes half a million pounds of our license fees to pay for a series of cinema adverts for the new Dr Who series. I for one am furious.
BasilRathbon Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I can barely contain my indifference. Better that than putting up lots of posters advertising Eastenders. And if they didn't spend the £500,000, do you seriously think they'll give it back to us?
Mathom Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 They'll more than get that back in increased sales of Doctor Who merchandise!

I know we won't ever get it back Basil i was more angry about what i think is a waste of money,i've never watched an episode of Dr Who but it's a popular show that i don't think merits the need for that amount of advertising and the money could have been much better spent.
BasilRathbon Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 In many respects I agree with you in that I see no need for the BBC to advertise its programmes at all. Surely anyone wanting to know what's on TV just buys a paper at the weekend that has a TV guide in it? It's not as if the adverts will bring in advertising revenue like ITV's would. That said, for whatever reason, the BBC does advertise, and as Dr Who is a bit of a flagship show for sci-fi lovers, it makes sense to show adverts for it at cinemas where sci-fi films are being shown. I've not watched Dr Who for years - is Tom Baker still in it, by the way?

alchresearch Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I'm more concerned with how much it's costing to launch a free news channel for Africa and the Middle East: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7288062.stm The last time I checked, these countries don't pay any TV licence fees. So who pays the £25 MILLION a year?

hennypenny Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 The BBC used to run an excellent series of informational webpages, which appear to have been largely scrapped. I would rather the £500,000 had been used to reinstate the web pages, as I miss them.
HarmOKnee Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I think Eastenders is a much bigger waste of money! Agree!
