2 black belts in 2 weeks

i had a brilliant GRACIE session on sunday.

 

thanks a lot monkey and the rest of the team for setting this up and getting such an amazing crowd of BJJers there.

 

i would estimate it was about 70+ people all on the mat at the same time, fighting for their belts and having a good laugh. best thing of all is that not 1 person was injured. what a credit to the sport.

 

well done all those who took place and graded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yer I how did the monkey do? Think the last i heard he'd told a few people that he expected his purple belt on the seminar before this one? Did it happen?

I don't think he got his purple but he can't be far away now. I think he was awarded another stripe for his blue.

as it gose guys people keep tellin me i'm ready 4 my purple but, as it is, royce thinks differnt. yes he awarded me a stripe on sunday so i now have 4 stripe's on my blue. i understand how the grading works & am sure when royce thinks i'm ready he will give me my purple. untll then i'll have 2 kick ass as a blue belt 4 stripe .lol

I'm someone from a judo background who has trained a little BJJ and I'm a bit confused about the belt system - especially the bit on here about purple belt? Though it's changing in judo you have to win fights to get promoted and I thought there was some of that in BJJ? So if you want a purple belt then you have to beat purple belts or higher?? If it's not about that then is it about some sort of assessment eg. your instructor who is a black belt presumably, recommends you for a promotion and when you demonstrate the requisite technical knowledge and fighting ability you get promoted?

 

The impression I get here is that 'monkey' is the instructor, so if he is only a blue belt then who instructs him? I presume he goes to a regular class or private lesson with a higher grade to improve and learn or else how can you dream of a higher grade - or is BJJ so different that you can teach yourself? As I say I am just looking in from the outside and I hope you will put me right! Thanks
