a friend of mine picked up an ugly necklace off the pavement outside our place of work a few years ago...100s of people had probably already walked past and ignored it, me included. She took it to the police, 3 months later no one had claimed it so she got it back (although if she sells it and then someone tries to claim it she'd have to pay the money back to them as it's never officially 'hers'). Took it to Christie's (just around the corner from work), they sneered at her because she looked like a student hocking a piece of tat, said maybe £100. Took it to a jeweller who valued it at around £3000...second opinion from a second jeweller said about the same. The moral of this one? If you work in Kensington, watch where you're walking. Also, never wear anything you find on the floor, it really is an eyesore.

Anyway, if it were me I'd stick up a couple of posters asking if anyone had lost anything notable nearby and ask them to contact me to tell me what it was and when. If no-one claimed it within maybe 2 weeks I'd give it to charity. I'm a firm believer in karma - if I don't need the £100 and give it to someone who does, then when I need something I'll get it too. It works with 20ps in swimming pool lockers anyway.

I remember many years back, my step father had actually seen a Elderly lady drop her envelope with her pension money in, as she thought she was putting it back into her bag. He waited for her to walk away, apparently put his foot on top of it, waited to see if anyone had seen then put his bags on floor to pay for what he had then bent down to pop into his bags and took money aswell. I remember him telling my mum at the time and feeling total ashamed at what he'd done. Always was a tight git! But to take what you'd seen belonged to another.

yes I would keep it and share it with my kids, now on the other hand if i found a purse or wallet i would deffinately return to the owner.

When i was about 16 i found £30 in the street, in 1977 this was about a months wage so you can imagine my joy,

me and my mates had the best night out we'd ever had, of course i shared it with them.

if i didnt know who it belonged to, i would keep it and treat myself!

if it had happened in a public place i would attempt to find out who it belonged to though.

once in, at a bar i saw £20 on the floor and asked the guy in front if he had dropped it, he said no so i just kept it! i'd tried to find the owner.... !

..happily hand it in whilst thinking about the little old lady who was going to spend it on a birthday present for her disabled grandson
