KenH Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 When talking about a "hospice" there is a danger of thinking about a ward full of patients and what they want. In fact what we should picture is an office complex full of medical and administrive staff including those who work for the NHS. It is most likely that these staff live in the South and West of the city and want to have offices in a park which they can get to easily from their homes. Building another hospice in the north would suit the patients and families but is unlikley to suit the staff.
zippy Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 From what I understand St Luke's concentrate their efforts on the people who live in the south of Sheffield. They do great work, so should all the people who live in the north of Sheffield and beyond also have the benefit of a St Luke's hospice, and become like Bluebell Wood who look after terminally ill children from around the whole region? Would you like to see half a dozen St Luke's around the region? given that there are already hospices in Barnsley and Rotherham ? and a multi site / multi provider arran gement for cancer patients in Sheffield ? those making statements aobut st luke's intention also ought to read the following http://www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/documents/welcome.htm hospice care is aobut more than the inpatient units ...

Surely hospices cater for than those who are ill with cancer. There are numerous diseases that can lead to you being terminally ill. Yet SLH say that they need to build in the south because the Macmillan unit covers the north:loopy:

Yet SLH say that they need to build in the south because the Macmillan unit covers the north:loopy: inpatient hospice care still tends to be for patients with Ca. hospice care isn't my area of clinicla practice but from a symptom control point of view cancer patients seem to be the people most in need of inpatient hospice care - especially when their disease tajectory takes a very sharp downward plunge ... other conditions ( e.g. COPD, heart failure , degenerative neuro conditions ) tend to be somewhat more gradual in their deterioration OR the sudden down ward plunges are fatal due to a lack of effective treatment modalities - ( e.g. the COPD patient you might be able to keep alive by invasive ventilation but wouldn't be able to wean ... )

Do the majority of medical and adminstrative staff live in the South and West of the city?? I know many that come from the North (well, actually at least 4 in my family:hihi:). Arent we now just creating more of a North/South divide by digressing to the staff.
Albert T Smith Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Shouldn't this post be on 'the other' thread? Tony's question is about whether SLH should build a hospice in north Sheffield, nothing to do with what happens in the south. Satellite small hospice, would cover the East, West, South and north.
SHsheff Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Satellite small hospice, would cover the East, West, South and north. Sorry, not being deliberately dense, but don't understand your point.
Heyesey Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Sorry, not being deliberately dense, but don't understand your point. He's missed out an S. "Satellite small hospices" would cover everywhere, if you built one in each area. That said, the costs would probably be prohibitive.
cgksheff Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Satellite small hospice, would cover the East, West, South and north. But haven't SLH just closed their satellite facilities?
SHsheff Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 He's missed out an S. "Satellite small hospices" would cover everywhere, if you built one in each area. That said, the costs would probably be prohibitive. Well, I wondered if that was what he'd meant. But, that would be at odds with the concept of SLH only talking about the site in the south in all recent communication. They've never (to my knowledge) included plans for small hospices to be built in the uh, north, west and east (assuming for the moment that the SLH under discussion is designed to serve the south). As I said, not being deliberately dense, but didn't get the point being made.
