If St Lukes serve South Sheffield should they build a hospice in north Sheffield

This is the link.

It talks about "Location to be South of a line drawn across the middle of Sheffield".

As I said before, I've always thought that SLH was for ALL people in Sheffield and surrounding areas. Their own booklet indicates that that's not the case (as was pointed out to me on the other - SLH/Graves Park -thread).

But you're quite right, it doesn't mention 'affluent south west' - that was sloppy assumption-making on my part because of where they've always been based, geographically. :)

From what I understand St Luke's concentrate their efforts on the people who live in the south of Sheffield.

They do great work, so should all the people who live in the north of Sheffield and beyond also have the benefit of a St Luke's hospice, and become like Bluebell Wood who look after terminally ill children from around the whole region?

Would you like to see half a dozen St Luke's around the region?

Yes if they are required.

I have often thought that,' The Elms ' on Old Hay Lane, Dore, Sheffield could be adapted for the purpose. Provided the the ' Home Farm Trust ' wanted to sell it, if they still are the owners

Probably satellite Hospice's in addition to the main new one that is presently being proposed to be built on land attached to Graves Park which users less than half of one percent of the actual parks land area, would serve the people of South Yorkshire and be a positive credit to the caring image of our city

Shouldn't this post be on 'the other' thread? Tony's question is about whether SLH should build a hospice in north Sheffield, nothing to do with what happens in the south.

SLH have specifically stated in their OWN literature that the north of Sheffield is served by the site at the NGH. That being the case then they have no right to use ANY land that belongs to the people of Sheffield to setup a devisive establishment, ESPECIALLY parkland.

Absolutely. The more that comes out about the SLH proposal, the more just downright wrong and immoral it can be seen to be.

According to the NHS St Lukes is the only hospice for the city.

and scroll down to "Hospice".

How this differs from the MacMillan operation at the NGH I wouldn't know as pallative care / hospices not an area I know a lot about.

Macmillan fund an 18-bed ward for cancer sufferers (as opposed to people who are terminally ill from other diseases).

I think SLH must have overlooke this minor detail when they said that the NGH serves people in the north of the city.

As I believe somebody has already pointed out on the Graves Park/SLH thread, SLH are basically grasping at any straw they can to demonstrate why they have to stay in the south of the city, where property/land prices are higher than they are in the north.

I don't really believe that this is true and, despite what Steve Kirk may be saying, I would be surprised if there was data to support it.

Either way, St Lukes don't come out of this looking good.

North Sheffield residents need to be asking St Lukes questions regarding their position on this, as they have outlined in their booklet. People should have equal access to such facilities, in my opinion, no matter what their postcode.

As a related aside I've just signed up for a monthly donation to MacMillan by direct debit. Thanks for the link Dozy :)

As stated SLH have said themselves that they need to build in the south of the city as the north is covered by the Macmillan unit based at the NGH. The inference here is that they do not have to cater for people in the north of the city. If they really do want to cater for all the people of Sheffield then wouldn't a multi centre approach be the way to do it?
