Tony Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 From what I understand St Luke's concentrate their efforts on the people who live in the south of Sheffield. They do great work, so should all the people who live in the north of Sheffield and beyond also have the benefit of a St Luke's hospice, and become like Bluebell Wood who look after terminally ill children from around the whole region? Would you like to see half a dozen St Luke's around the region?

They do great work, so should all the people who live in the north of Sheffield and beyond also have the benefit of a St Luke's hospice....? Is this true, Tony? Surely St Luke's take anyone from the local (ie Sheffield and surrounding) area that is in need (by whatever need-based criteria they have to apply)?
theripsaw Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I dont think they should have to do anything. They are a just a charity after all and not a public run service.
KenH Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Is this true, Tony? Surely St Luke's take anyone from the local (ie Sheffield and surrounding) area that is in need (by whatever need-based criteria they have to apply)? This is what they are now saying. They are looking for a site below a line draw east-west across the city centre because they serve that area.
SHsheff Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 This is what they are now saying. They are looking for a site below a line draw east-west across the city centre because they serve that area. Indeed. I am now the wiser, thank you. And, have to say, I agree with theripsaw that they're a charity and thus can choose who they help and who they don't. Whether or not the good people of other areas of Sheffield have always been aware that SLH existed only for the affluent south west is another question. I suspect not.
Longcol Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Whether or not the good people of other areas of Sheffield have always been aware that SLH existed only for the affluent south west is another question. I suspect not. And you can evidence that?
SHsheff Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 And you can evidence that? Nope. Hence saying it's 'another question' and 'I suspect'. Do you think people have always been aware that St Luke's wasn't for people in the north? I used to live in Loxley and never realised that the hospice was nothing to do with us folks! I'll stand corrected if it's always been common knowledge, I was voicing an opinion.
Longcol Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Nope. Hence saying it's 'another question' and 'I suspect'. No - you were quite clearly stating "are people aware that SLH only serve the affluent South West". I'm against the building in Graves Park but also getting a little peeved that opponents are are coming out with all sorts of inaccuracies - they devalue thay case.
cgksheff Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 From what I understand St Luke's concentrate their efforts on the people who live in the south of Sheffield. I don't really believe that this is true and, despite what Steve Kirk may be saying, I would be surprised if there was data to support it.
Longcol Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 According to the NHS St Lukes is the only hospice for the city. http://www.sheffield.nhs.uk/health/4-3-2.php and scroll down to "Hospice". How this differs from the MacMillan operation at the NGH I wouldn't know as pallative care / hospices not an area I know a lot about.
